A hard disk drive (HDD) includes a heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR) head. The HAMR head includes one or more features comprising a laser device that is a heterogeneous integrated epitaxial grown GaAS laser. The laser device couples directly with a waveguide that transfers the electromagnetic radiation generated by the laser device to a near field transducer. The device includes an N-doped layer for coupling the output of the GaAs active layer to the waveguide.

Methods, systems, and programing of one tactile sensor are presented. In one example, magnetic sensors containing one or more layers are formed on a base substrate for sensing a magnetic field generated by one ferromagnet present in close proximity to the magnetic sensors. The ferromagnet is embedded in an elastomer matrix. When an external force is applied to the elastomer matrix, it deforms and displaces the ferromagnet. As a result, the magnetic field generated by the ferromagnet changes. This change is sensed by the magnetic sensors to in turn quantify the applied force.

A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a near-field emitter and a middle disk. The near-field emitter includes a peg and an anchor disk. The peg is configured to produce a hot spot on a proximal magnetic disk. The peg is disposed proximal to a media-facing surface of the heat-assisted magnetic recording head. The anchor disk is disposed behind the peg relative to the media-facing surface. The middle disk has a melting temperature of at least 1500 degrees Celsius. The middle disk is disposed in a down-track direction relative to the near-field emitter and is coupled to the anchor disk.

A heat-assisted magnetic recording head includes a near-field transducer and a heat sink. The near-field transducer includes a middle disk and a near-field emitter. The near-field emitter includes a peg and an anchor disk. The peg is configured to produce a hot spot on a proximal magnetic disk. The peg is disposed proximal to a media-facing surface of the heat-assisted magnetic recording head. The anchor disk is disposed behind the peg relative to the media-facing surface. The heat sink includes a core and a liner. The core includes a primary metal, and the liner includes a primary metal. The liner is coupled to the core and is disposed along an outer surface of the core. The middle disk is disposed between and coupled to the liner and the anchor disk. The primary metal of the liner comprises at least one of iridium, rhodium, tantalum, tungsten, or ruthenium.

A write head having a main pole, a gap layer, and at least two sacrificial layers. In accordance with one embodiment, a method includes depositing a non-magnetic gap layer of material above a main pole layer of magnetic material; depositing a sacrificial layer of material above the non-magnetic gap layer of material; etching a portion of the sacrificial layer of material while not entirely removing the sacrificial layer of material; and depositing additional sacrificial material to the etched sacrificial layer.

One embodiment described herein is directed to a method involving depositing a seed layer on a substrate, the seed layer comprising A1 phase FePt with a ratio of Pt of Fe greater than 1:1. A main layer is deposited on the seed layer, the main layer comprising A1 phase FePt with a ratio of Pt to Fe of approximately 1:1. A cap layer is deposited on the main layer, the cap layer comprising A1 phase FePt with a ratio of Pt to Fe of less than 1:1. The seed, main and cap layers are annealed to convert the A1 phase FePt to L1phase FePt having a graded FePt structure of varying stoichimetry from approximately FePtadjacent a lower portion of the structure proximate the substrate to FePtadjacent an upper portion of the structure opposite the lower portion.

An apparatus has a main pole layer of magnetic material, a second layer of magnetic material, a first gap layer of non-magnetic material between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material, and a second gap layer of non-magnetic material disposed between the main pole layer and the second layer of magnetic material. The second gap layer of non-magnetic material can be directly adjacent to the second layer of magnetic material. In accordance with one embodiment, this allows the gap to serve as a non-magnetic seed for the second layer of magnetic material. A method of manufacturing such a device is also described.

A write head having a write pole with a tip portion defining a pole tip and a paddle portion extending from the tip portion away from the pole tip, the paddle portion defining a back edge. The write head also has a coil structure having at least two active turns crossing the paddle portion, wherein a back of the coil structure is no more than 1 micrometer past the back edge of the write pole. In some implementations, a length from the pole tip to the back edge is no more than 4.5 micrometers.

The write head also includes a yoke having a yoke tip recessed from the ABS, and a helical coil wrapped around the main pole and the yoke. A write head having a main pole having a pole tip, the main pole having a leading side and a trailing side; and a coil structure around the main pole, the coil structure having no more than two active turns on the trailing side. A non-active, or dummy turn, may be present.

Various embodiments can be generally directed to a magnetoresistive stack with a first stripe height and a biasing magnet positioned adjacent the magnetoresistive stack. The biasing magnet can have a second stripe height that is less than the first stripe height. The first and second stripe heights may correspond to a minimum signal to noise ratio in the magnetoresistive stack.
