A gas generating composition exhibiting good slag forming ability is provided. The gas generating composition includes a fuel ranging from 10 to 60% by mass, an oxidizing agent ranging from 10 to 70% by mass, and a cooling agent (other than iron oxide) ranging from 1 to 20% by mass. The cooling agent has a volume mean diameter (D50) of 10 to 70 &#x3bc;m and a volume mean diameter at cumulative of 10% (D10) of equal to or greater than 5 &#x3bc;m. The cooling agent acts to decrease the combustion temperature and improve slag forming ability.

A gas generating composition that can suppress the generation of mist is provided. The above gas generating composition comprises (a) a fuel, (b) an oxidizer, and (c) a compound selected from a group comprising a phosphoric acid compound or a salt thereof. The content ratio of (c) in the above composition is preferably 0.1 to 5 mass %.

A highly heat-resistant gas generating agent is provided. The gas generating agent is for a gas generator for an airbag system that is installed at least outside a vehicle cabin and that protects an individual subjected to impact by the vehicle, and has a mass loss rate of not more than 1% after holding for 400 hours at 130&#xb0; C. in a sealed system. The gas generating agent preferably comprises fuel and oxidizing agent and the melting point of the fuel is preferably at least 250&#xb0; C.

A gas generating composition which can prevent formation of mist is provided. A gas generating composition comprising (a) a glass powder, (b) aluminum hydroxide and/or magnesium hydroxide, (c) an organic compound as fuel, and (d) an oxygen-containing oxidizing agent. By the action of the component (a), combustion residues can be solidified to form a slag, thus preventing formation of mist.

Provided is a gas generating composition having a low combustion temperature and having a low produced amount of toxic carbon monoxide, ammonia and nitrogen oxides at the time of combustion. The gas generating composition includes the following components (a), (b) and (c) and optionally the component (d) and/or the component (e): (a) an organic compound as fuel; (b) an oxygen-containing oxidizing agent; (c) aluminum hydroxide; (d) a binder; and (e) an additive selected from metal oxides and metal carbide.

An inflator for an air bag has, in a housing having a gas discharging port, a combustion chamber accommodating a molded article of a gas generating composition which is burnt to generate gas and ignition means to ignite the molded article of a gas generating composition. The molded article contains a metal component and meets the requirement: (A) the (theoretical) combustion flame temperature of the molded article of the gas generating composition is 2000&#xb0; C. or less, and part or the whole of the metal or metal oxide after combustion of the molded article of the gas generating composition has a melting point not lower than the combustion flame temperature; and (B) bulk combustion residues remain in the combustion chamber at the time of combustion of the molded article of the gas generating composition.

A gas generating composition for air bags to be used as occupant crash protection systems in automobiles, which is less toxic or dangerous, can be easily handled, has a high combustion efficiency and a high gas generation efficiency, produces few residue during combustion, can be safely manufactured and exhibits a high molding strength in the molding step; and a molded article thereof. The invention provides a gas generating composition containing (a) a fuel comprising at least one polymer compound selected from polyacrylic polymer compounds, polyacetal, urea resins, melamine resins, ketone resins and cellulose-based polymer compounds; (b) an oxidizing agent selected from ammonium nitrate and phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate; and (c) at least one combustion accelerator selected from oxyacid salts such as metal nitrates, metal nitrites, perchlorates and chlorates; a molded article thereof; and an inflator for air bags with the use of the same.
