A hydrocarbon injector deflector for a diesel exhaust system includes a base plate having a first end linearly extending to a second end to define a first side and a second side. The base plate is arcuately formed such that the first side extends arcuately to the second side. The first end is disposed upstream of the exhaust system relative to the second end. The hydrocarbon deflector further includes a frame connected to the second end of the base plate and extends therefrom at a first angle. The frame has an opening formed through the frame. The opening defines an outer wall having an inner side of the frame. The deflector further includes a tab extending from the inner side at a second angle.

Hydrocarbon injector deflector assembly for diesel exhaust system

Methods for monitoring and/or regenerating a selective catalytic reduction particulate filter (SCRF) are provided. The SCRF comprises a porous filter substrate and a catalytic composition capable of reducing NOx applied thereto. Methods include determining a SCRF pressure differential (dP) and determining the SCRF soot loading using a 1st SCRF dP map if the SCRF has not been degreened, or a 2nd SCRF dP map if the SCRF has been degreened. The SCRF has been degreened if one or more of a degreening cumulative time and temperature threshold has been achieved and a filter regeneration count threshold has been achieved. The 1st and 2nd SCRF dP maps correlate SCRF dP and one or more of SCRF temperature, exhaust mass flow, and exhaust volumetric flow to a SCRF soot loading. The method can optionally further include initiating a filter regeneration if the determined SCRF soot loading is above a soot loading threshold.

Methods for monitoring and regenerating selective catalytic reduction filter devices

An exhaust gas treatment device includes a housing having a wall. The wall of the housing defines an interior chamber. A substrate is supported by the housing within the interior chamber of the housing. The substrate extends along a longitudinal axis. The substrate includes a flow through structure that allows the flow of exhaust gas to flow through the substrate. The substrate includes a catalytic composition disposed thereon for reacting with the flow of exhaust gas. The substrate includes a cavity, extending along a cavity axis, which is transverse to the longitudinal axis of the substrate. A sensor is attached to the housing. The sensor includes a probe that at least partially extends into the cavity of the substrate, for sensing a gaseous component in the flow of exhaust gas. The cavity mixes the flow of exhaust gas and directs the exhaust gas toward the probe of the sensor.

Exhaust gas treatment device having integrated gas sampling sensor

Selective catalytic reduction filter (SCRF) devices and systems incorporating the same are provided. Systems can include an exhaust gas source, an exhaust gas conduit capable of receiving an exhaust gas stream from the exhaust gas source, and an SCRF device in fluid communication therewith. The SCRF device can include a filter, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst disposed on at least portion of the filter, and a soot oxidizing catalyst (SOC) material disposed on at least a portion of one or more of the filter and the SCR catalyst. The SOC material can include one or more transition metal oxides, excluding platinum group metals. The SOC material can include one or more of a titanium oxide, an iron oxide, a tungsten oxide, a cerium oxide, and acidic zirconia. The SOC material can be in amorphous form. The SOC material can be biased towards to the upstream side of the filter.

Soot oxidation catalyst materials and selective catalytic reduction filter devices incorporating the same

A method is disclosed of providing a fuel efficient regeneration of an exhaust after-treatment (AT) system that includes a lean oxides of nitrogen (NO) trap (LNT) and a selective catalytic reduction filter (SCRF) positioned downstream of the LNT. The method includes regulating a selectable position valve. The valve permits a first gas flow portion to pass through the LNT and diverts a remaining second portion of exhaust gas flow from a first passage connecting an engine and the AT system to a second exhaust passage to thereby bypass the LNT. The method also includes regulating a first device to inject fuel into the first portion of the exhaust gas flow. The injection of fuel in to the first portion of the exhaust gas flow provides fuel efficient regeneration of the LNT and promotes NOconversion and ammonia (NH) formation in the LNT. A system employing the method is also disclosed.

A snorkel assembly for reading optimization of a sensor, wherein the snorkel assembly may be configured to be positioned around and spaced apart from the sensor. The snorkel assembly may include an upstream side and a downstream side. The snorkel assembly may include a cup section and a tube section extending from the cup section. The tube section may include an inlet opening on the upstream side of the snorkel assembly. The cup section may include an exhaust opening on the downstream side of the snorkel assembly.

Plug-in NOx sensor snorkel for reading optimization under packaging constraints

A direct fuel injection internal combustion engine fluidly coupled to an exhaust aftertreatment system is described and includes a plurality of fluidly coupled exhaust purifying devices and an exhaust gas sensor. A method of controlling the engine includes, activating, via a heater controller, a heating element of the exhaust gas sensor in response to starting the internal combustion engine. An exhaust gas feedstream is monitored to determine a temperature of the exhaust gas sensor. Engine control to effect heating of one of the exhaust purifying devices is permitted only when a temperature of the exhaust gas sensor is greater than a threshold temperature.

Method for controlling an internal combustion engine

An engine exhaust system includes an exhaust pipe assembly having an engine exhaust system inlet configured to receive engine exhaust and an engine exhaust system outlet. The system includes a first selective catalytic reduction (SCR) catalyst device positioned downstream in exhaust flow from the engine exhaust system inlet. The first SCR catalyst device includes a substrate with a metallic catalyst coated on the substrate. An electric heater is configured to heat the metallic catalyst. A second SCR catalyst device is positioned downstream in engine exhaust flow from the first SCR catalyst device and upstream of the engine exhaust system outlet. The first SCR catalyst device and the exhaust pipe assembly define an empty chamber between the substrate and the second SCR catalyst device. Engine exhaust flows directly from the substrate to the second SCR catalyst device through the empty chamber.

Engine exhaust system

A SCR device includes a substrate having a first portion, and a second portion disposed downstream of the first portion. The first portion of the substrate includes a volume that is between 15% and 25% of a total volume of the substrate. A first selective catalytic reduction compound is disposed on the first portion of the substrate, and includes an iron zeolite (Fe-Zeolite) compound. A second selective catalytic reduction compound is disposed on the second portion of the substrate, and includes a copper (Cu) SAPO-34 compound. The copper SAPO-34 compound includes a catalyst density of less than 2.74 mg copper per cubic centimeter of copper SAPO-34 compound. The copper SAPO-34 compound is applied onto the second portion of the substrate at a compound density of less than 110 g of copper SAPO-34 compound per liter of volume of the second portion of the substrate.

Selective catalytic reduction device

An exhaust system for a diesel engine, includes an exhaust passage adapted to be attached to the diesel engine. A diesel oxidation catalyst is provided in the exhaust passage along with a selective catalyst reduction device disposed downstream from the diesel oxidation catalyst. A diesel exhaust fluid mixing system includes a diesel exhaust fluid injection nozzle and a mixing device defining a single inlet opening and a single outlet opening connected to one another by a partial spiral flow passage. The diesel exhaust fluid injection nozzle injects diesel exhaust fluid directly into the inlet opening of the partial spiral flow passage.

Diesel exhaust fluid mixing system for a linear arrangement of diesel oxidation catalyst and selective catalytic reduction filter

An integrated sensor-catalyst is disclosed for an after-treatment (AT) system used to filter an exhaust gas flow emitted by an internal combustion engine. The integrated sensor-catalyst includes a sensor element configured to detect a parameter of the exhaust gas flow. The integrated sensor-catalyst also includes a micro-catalyst element configured to filter a pollutant from the exhaust gas flow. Additionally, the integrated sensor-catalyst includes a housing configured to hold the sensor element and the micro-catalyst element and fix the micro-catalyst element relative to the sensor element such that the micro-catalyst element is arranged and maintained in the exhaust gas flow upstream of the sensor element. A vehicle including such an AT system with the integrated sensor-catalyst is also disclosed.

Integrated sensor-catalyst

A mixer includes a plurality of blades extending along a longitudinal axis. The blades are arranged in a single row, and are axially spaced from each other along a transverse axis. Each of the blades defines a window. Each of the blades includes an upstream portion, and a downstream portion. Each of the blades includes a bend at the window that forms an interior blade angle between its respective upstream portion and its respective downstream portion. The single row of the blades is arranged to include a first group of blades and a second group of blades. The interior blade angle of each of the blades in the first group faces in a first axial direction along the transverse axis. The interior blade angle of each of the blades in the second group faces in a second axial direction along the transverse axis.

Exhaust mixer for compact system

An after-treatment (AT) system for a flow of exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine includes a first AT device and a second AT device in fluid communication with and positioned in the exhaust gas flow downstream of the first AT device. The AT system also includes an exhaust passage configured to carry the exhaust gas flow from the first AT device to the second AT device. The AT system additionally includes an injector configured to introduce a reductant into the exhaust passage. The second AT device includes an inlet cone having a volute defining a spiral primary path for the exhaust gas flow into the second AT device and configured to generate a swirling motion of and turbulence in the exhaust gas flow. A vehicle employing the AT system is also disclosed.

Reductant mixing system for an exhaust gas after-treatment device

An exhaust gas treatment system to treat exhaust gas includes a particulate filter, a second temperature sensor and a control module. The particulate filter includes a PF substrate configured to trap particulate matter contained in the exhaust gas. The second temperature sensor is configured to output an outlet temperature signal indicating an outlet temperature at the outlet of the particulate filter. The control module is in electrical communication with the second temperature sensor to receive the outlet temperature signal. The control module determines a maximum substrate temperature of the PF substrate based on the outlet temperature. The control module is further configured to determine whether the particulate filter includes an active washcoat disposed thereon based on the maximum substrate temperature.

A mixer for an exhaust gas treatment system includes a support body that defines a mixing chamber. A plurality of first blades is arranged in a row, and is disposed along a transverse axis. Each of the first blades extends from an upstream edge, toward a first lateral edge surface of the mixing chamber, to a downstream edge, at a first row angle relative to the transverse axis. A plurality of second blades is arranged in a row, and is disposed along the transverse axis. Each of the second blades extends from an upstream edge, toward a second lateral edge surface of the mixing chamber, to a downstream edge, at a second row angle relative to the transverse axis. The first row angle is less than the second row angle. The row of the first blades is axially spaced from the row of the second blades.
