The present disclosure discloses an &#x3b1;-alumina carrier, comprising the elements of lanthanum and silicon both dispersed in the interior and on the surface of the carrier. The mass ratio of the element of lanthanum to the element of silicon is in the range from 0.1:1 to 20:1. The inventors of the present disclosure have made extensive researches into the field of the silver catalyst and alumina carrier thereof, and added the elements of lanthanum and silicon (i.e., bulk phase addition) in preparing the alumina carrier used in the silver catalyst. The carrier thus obtained contains the elements of silicon and lanthanum both in the interior and on the surface thereof, and has improved specific surface area and strength. The silver catalyst prepared with the carrier can react in a low reaction temperature (has a high reaction activity) and has a high selectivity in producing ethylene oxide through oxidation of ethylene.

The present invention relates to an alumina support for silver catalyst, a process for preparing said alumina support, a silver catalyst made from said alumina support, and a use of said silver catalyst in the production of ethylene oxide by the oxidization of ethylene. An alumina support comprises alpha-alumina as the main crystal phase of its backbone, and having a specific surface area of no higher than 3.0 m/g, a pore volume ranging from 0.3 ml/g to 0.8 ml/g, an alkaline earth metal content ranging from 0.05% to 2.0% by weight of the support, wherein the support has such properties that treating the support with an aqueous oxalic acid solution having a concentration ranging from 0.4% to 2.0% by weight and having twice the weight of the support for 30 minutes can produce a leach liquor having an aluminum content of no higher than 60 &#x3bc;g/mL, a sodium content of no higher than 20 &#x3bc;g/mL, and a silicon content of no higher than 40 &#x3bc;g/mL. Processes for preparing the alumina support, silver catalysts comprising the alumina support, and methods of preparing ethylene oxide by ethylene oxidation using the silver catalyst are also disclosed herein.
