A logging tool is positioned downhole in a wellbore, where the logging tool communicates with a computer on the Earth's surface over an analog signal path. Tool data is received from a sensor associated with the logging tool and encoded into a symbol signal. The symbol signal is transmitted to a receiver system via the analog signal path. The receiver system has one or more filters to filter the symbol signal. The one or more filters includes an equalizer filter indicative of an analog signal path response of the analog signal path. The filtered symbol signal is decoded into second tool data. The second tool data is encoded into second symbols and based on the second symbols, an updated analog signal path response of the analog signal path is generated to update the equalizer filter.

Use of tool data to equalize a channel response

Systems, apparatus, and methods are described for formatting and for performing data communications between a surface modem and one or more modems located in a logging tool of a bottom hole assembly for use in a wellbore environment.

Telemetry configurations for downhole communications

One or more adjustment to a set of telemetry communication parameters utilized for providing communications between a surface modem and at least one downhole modem of a borehole logging system are described. The one or more adjustments to the telemetry communication parameters may be made following completion of an initial training of the modems and without the need to power down the surface modem or any of the downhole modem(s) included in the at least one downhole modem.

Adaptive wireline telemetry in a downhole environment

In an example implementation, communications between a downhole logging tool and surface computing subsystem can be provided through a cable that includes one or more electrical conductors. To allow multiple channels of data to be transmitted along a single multi-conductor cable, data can be divided into two or more different channels, and each channel of data can be transmitted along the conductors. Due to the length of the cable, the electrical conductors of the cable may be subject to strong capacitive and inductive coupling. As a consequence of this coupling, signals sent downhole along any two arbitrary conductors may be subject to distortion, and can produce significant 'crosstalk' on the other conductors. The effects of crosstalk can be reduced in a variety of ways, for example using QR decomposition.
