A method for detecting an ice on a road surface includes: providing a spectral imaging camera; recording a first reflectance (R1) of the surface at 0.545 to 0.565 &#x3bc;m using the spectral imaging camera; recording a second reflectance (R2) of the surface at 0.620 to 0.670 &#x3bc;m using the spectral imaging camera; recording a third reflectance (R3) of the surface at 0.841 to 0.876 &#x3bc;m using the spectral imaging camera; calculating an ice index based on the first reflectance, the second reflectance, and the third reflectance; providing a thermometer; recording a surface temperature of the surface using the thermometer; and detecting a presence of the ice on the surface based on the ice index and the surface temperature. A system for detecting an ice on a surface is also disclosed.

Method and a system for detecting road ice by spectral imaging

In a self-organizing wireless multihop network, each node device selects operation among short-range (SR) and long-range (LR) communication modes, among which the SR mode uses a higher data rate than the LR mode. Each node device advertises connectivity link availability for neighboring node devices, and selectively initiates a link in response to connectivity availability advertised by at least one neighboring node device. The availability advertising is performed in the SR and the LR communication modes, according to a periodicity that is dynamically-variable in response to prevailing circumstances in the local neighborhood. The link initiation is selectively performed in one of either the SR or the LR communication mode based on selection criteria that include data throughput performance associated with different neighboring node devices with which connectivity is available via a certain communication mode.

Dynamically-selectable multi-modal modulation in wireless multihop networks

An enclosure and mounting system that provide ideal RF signal transmission and battery management for AMR systems utilized with a utility meter in a utility meter pit environment are disclosed. The AMR device includes processing electronics that receive consumption data from a pit-mounted utility meter, an antenna to wirelessly transmit signals from the AMR device, and an enclosure that houses the processing electronics and the antenna to provide protection thereto. The enclosure is configured to support different battery sizes and provide battery wire/connector management. The enclosure also defines a dome-shaped antenna compartment therein to house the antenna, the antenna compartment protruding out from a remainder of the enclosure so as to provide for positioning of the antenna at a location extended out therefrom. A companion adaptor utilized with the AMR device is mountable to a cover of the utility meter pit and increases a height of the antenna relative thereto.
