Method and apparatus for calibration of instruments that monitor the concentration of a sterilant in a system

Apparatus and method for determining the dispersibility of a product in particulate form

Sterilization apparatus includes a monitoring system capable of continuously monitoring levels of a sterilant, such as hydrogen peroxide vapor. The monitoring system includes a sensor chamber joined in fluid communication with a sterilant supply conduit of the sterilization apparatus. A gas-detecting semiconductor sensing element, and associated temperature sensor, are provided within the sensor chamber to provide output signals corresponding to detected levels of sterilant. The sensor chamber isolates parametric influence, such as relative humidity, temperature and flow rate, to provide more accurate concentration level readings. A data collection circuit is operatively coupled to the sensors to provide an output corresponding to detected levels of sterilant within the apparatus. The data collection circuit may include an electronic memory to store the collected data, and signal connectors, such as data ports for a physical connection or transmitters for a remote transmission, to transfer the signals representative of the collected data to a remote communication unit. A processor chip or circuit may be provided proximate the sensor chamber, and a processor may be provided in communication with the remote communication unit. The monitoring system can be controlled using a circuit to select conditions for operation, or by remote control using near infrared or radio wave signals.

Apparatus having sterilant monitoring system

A system for monitoring concentrations of sterilant, such as hydrogen peroxide vapor, within a sterilization apparatus, includes a self-contained, sterilant monitoring assembly that is freely positionable within the sterilization apparatus. The assembly includes a gas-detecting sensor and associated temperature sensor mounted on a portable structure, as well as a suitable data collection circuit for receiving output signals from the sensors. The assembly also includes signals connectors, such as a physical data port or a remote transmitter, or both. Signals can be transmitted concurrently with data collection, or an electronic memory may be provided for subsequent transfer of the collected data. Collected data is transferred to a remote communication unit positioned exteriorly of the sterilization apparatus. The collected data is processed by a processor, which is either provided as part of the monitoring assembly or provided remotely as part of the monitoring system as a whole, to identify the corresponding detected sterilant levels. The assembly is operated by a power source, which can be activated manually, by preprogrammed relays, or remotely by a control system capable of receiving control signals via near infrared or radio wave transmissions. A carrier element is provided to carry the sterilant monitoring assembly along the conveyor path of the sterilization apparatus and, thus, collect data at each sterilization station.

Self-contained sterilant monitoring assembly and method of using same

Sterilant monitoring assembly includes an external housing defining an inlet and an outlet, and an internal flow path extending therethrough. An internal housing is located within the external housing and substantially surrounded by the internal flow path. The internal housing defines an interior sensor chamber therein, and includes a valve arrangement to join the interior sensor chamber selectively in fluid communication with the internal flow path. Preferably, the valve arrangement of the internal housing is defined by a base portion and a cover portion moveable relative to each other between an open position and a closed position. In one embodiment, the cover portion has an open end section configured for sealing engagement with an opposing surface of the base portion when moved axially to the closed position. In another preferred embodiment, the base portion and cover portion include mating peripheral walls. The peripheral walls of the base and cover portions have corresponding passageways and openings defined therein, respectively, so as to be in alignment with each other when moved to the open position and out of alignment with each other when moved to the closed position. A sterilant sensor, and any other desired sensor, is positioned to provide output signals corresponding to detected levels of sterilant and related parameters within the interior sensor chamber.

Sterilant monitoring assembly and apparatus and method using same

A method and system for ultrasonically analyzing flowable products. The method includes the steps of providing a flowable product to be ultrasonically analyzed. In addition the method includes the steps of providing a means for generating and receiving ultrasonic waves, a processing unit, and a means for agitating the flowable product. A flowable product is agitated using the means for agitating. The means for generating and receiving ultrasonic waves is then placed in ultrasonic contact with the flowable product and ultrasonic waves are directed into the flowable product. Ultrasonic waves are received using the means for generating and receiving ultrasonic waves and the received waves are transmitted to the processing unit where they are processed by establishing respective vectors for a plurality of reflective contents of the flowable product and by comparing the respective vectors to a predetermined, acceptable statistical range of vectors. The system includes a means for conveying a flowable product where the means for conveying includes an agitating means for agitating the flowable product. The system further includes a means for generating and receiving a plurality of ultrasonic waves, a means for selectively placing the means for generating and receiving in ultrasonic contact with the flowable product on said means for conveying, and a processing means for analyzing ultrasonic waves received by the means for generating and receiving. The processing means includes a means for establishing respective vectors for a plurality of reflective contents of the flowable product and a means for comparing the respective vectors to a predetermined, acceptable statistical range of vectors.

Method and apparatus for analyzing flowable products

An apparatus for analyzing a liquid product. The apparatus includes a conveyor assembly having a conveyor belt and an agitator. The conveyor belt is constructed to deliver a unit of liquid product from the agitator to an analysis position. The agitator is constructed to impart motion to a unit of liquid product. The apparatus further includes an ultrasound transmissive pad assembly having a pad defining a chamber therein. A liquid acoustical couplant is contained in the chamber. The ultrasound transmissive pad assembly further includes an ultrasonic transducer in ultrasonic contact with the liquid acoustical couplant. The pad is positioned to contact a unit of liquid product at the analysis position. The pad has an upper portion and a lower portion and is orientated such that the upper portion contacts a unit of liquid product delivered to the analysis position before the lower portion contacts the unit of liquid product delivered to the analysis position.

Method and apparatus for noninvasively analyzing flowable products

A pad for transmitting acoustical waves between an ultrasound probe and a target surface. The pad includes a first layer having a first porous portion which defines first layer pores therethrough. The first layer pores have a first layer pore dimension. The pad further includes a second layer having a first porous portion which defines second layer pores therethrough. The second layer pores have a second layer pore dimension. The second layer is attached to the first layer to define a space therebetween. The first porous portion of the first layer overlies the first porous portion of said second layer. An ultrasound couplant is disposed in the space defined between the first and second layers. The ultrasound couplant has a molecule size that is less than or substantially equal to the first layer pore dimension and less than or substantially equal to the second layer pore dimension.

Ultrasound transmissive pad

The present invention provides an apparatus and method for testing seal strength and integrity of packages and for testing container and lid integrity, during an on-line production processing environment. Air pressure is introduced in a unique way to test the container and/or container seal in an additional step of an otherwise typical processing environment. A computer may be in communication with the testing sensors to control the processing in the event a failure is detected. The present invention provides a way to meet the continuously increasing line speed in form, fill and seal production processes with a unique ability of having complete package integrity testing for any odd shapes and package combinations.

On-line container and seal integrity test system

A method for conducting an ultrasound procedure on an object having a target surface. The method includes the step of providing an ultrasound probe having an acoustical wave emitting end portion. A pad for transmitting acoustical waves between the ultrasound probe and a target surface of an object also is provided. The pad includes a first layer having a first porous portion which defines first layer pores therethrough. The first layer pores have a first layer pore dimension. The pad further includes a second layer having a first porous portion which defines second layer pores therethrough. The second layer pores have a second layer pore dimension. The second layer is attached to the first layer so as to define a space therebetween. The first porous portion of the first layer overlies the first porous portion of the layer. An ultrasound couplant is disposed in the space defined between the first layer and the second layer. The ultrasound couplant has a molecule size which is less than or substantially equal to the first layer pore dimension, and which is less than or substantially equal to the second layer pore dimension. The method further includes the steps of placing the first porous portion of the second layer in contact with a target surface and placing the acoustical wave emitting end portion of the ultrasound probe in contact with the first porous portion of the first layer. The ultrasound probe is then activated.

Method for conducting an ultrasound procedure using an ultrasound

The need for a highly viscous couplant gel or water spray to form an acoustical couple for ultrasound testing is eliminated by employing an ultrasound probe module. A porous membrane and an ultrasound probe cooperate to define a chamber which contains a liquid acoustical couplant. When pressure is applied to the liquid acoustical couplant it passes through the porous membrane. The porous membrane and chamber are disposed such that ultrasound signals going to or away from the ultrasound probe pass through the liquid acoustical couplant and porous membrane.
