This invention relates to aliphatic, carbamate-functional polyester resins for use in coatings. More particularly this invention relates to aliphatic, carbamate-functional polyester resins containing 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (TMCD) that exhibit improved scratch resistance and acid etch resistance when formulated into 2K automotive clearcoats. These carbamate-functional polyesters can be used as the sole resin in the clearcoat binder or in combination with other carbamate-functional acrylic resins and/or hydroxyl-functional acrylic and polyester resins.

Thermosetting coating composition with improved scratch resistance

Disclosed are aliphatic polyester resins containing specific molar quantities of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol, and solvent borne, thermosetting monocoating compositions prepared therefrom. The aliphatic polyesters exhibit good hardness and flexibility when formulated into thermosetting coatings compositions.

A soft feel curable polyester composition comprising the residues of a 2,2,4,4-tetraalkylcyclobutane-1,3-diol, a C-Cdiol other than 2,2,4,4-tetraalkylcyclobutane-1,3-diol, a C-Cpolyol, an alicyclic diacid and an acyclic aliphatic diacid, wherein said curable polyester contains at least 90 mole percent of aliphatic diacid residues, based on the total moles of diacid residues, and wherein said curable polyester has a hydroxyl number of about 100 to about 250 mgKOH/g, an acid number of 0 to about 30 mgKOH/g, and a number average molecular weight of about 500 to about 10,000 g/mole, a soft segment polyol, an isocyanate crosslinker and a solvent or a solvent mixture.

Curable polyester polyols and their use in thermosetting soft feel coating formulations

The invention is a thermosetting coating composition comprised of an aliphatic polycarbonate resin and a cross linker. The aliphatic polycarbonate resins are derived from hydroxyl containing compounds including 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (TMCD) and 1,4-cyclohexane dimethanol (CHDM). The coatings made of these polycarbonates exhibit exceptional toughness; they possess a high degree of hardness while maintaining a high level of flexibility/impact resistance. These polycarbonate resins also exhibited better hydrolytic stability as compared to their polyester counterparts.
