Described are magnetic recording heads that include auxiliary current wires that drive the write pole tip, augmenting the main coils that provide magnetomotive force to the write pole. The auxiliary wires are provided in close proximity to the write pole tip near the media-facing surface of the recording head, and are preferably in closer proximity to the write pole tip than are the main coils. In certain writer designs that include one or more heat sink structures positioned near or around the write pole tip, such as may be found in heat-assisted magnetic recording writer constructions, the auxiliary wire(s) may be accommodated near or around the heat sink structures, or the heat sink structures themselves can serve as the auxiliary wires.

A recording head includes a bearing surface, a first writer and a first shield structure for the first writer. The recording head also includes a second writer and a second shield structure for the second writer. The recording head further includes a magnetic bridge connecting the first shield structure to the second shield structure at the bearing surface.

A write head having a write pole tip. The write pole tip includes a bearing surface and a sidewall extending from the bearing surface to a rear end of the write pole tip. The sidewall has a first shape (e.g., a straight-line sidewall shape) substantially at the bearing surface and a second shape (e.g., a multi-segment sidewall shape or a curved sidewall shape) between the bearing surface and the rear end.

A method includes forming a write pole layer having a front surface, a leading surface, a trailing surface and side surfaces connecting the leading surface to the trailing surface. The method also includes forming side shield layers proximate to the side surfaces of the write pole layer. A patterned sacrificial layer is deposited over the side shield layers, and a trailing surface bevel is formed on the write pole layer.

A storage device includes a storage medium and a transducer head with two writers positioned to write to a same surface of the storage medium. The two writers are separated from one another along a down-track direction of a data track on the storage medium and independently controllable to write data.

In certain embodiments, an apparatus may comprise a first output driver connected to a first output via a first trace and a second output driver connected to a second output via a second trace. The first output driver may be configured to output a first drive signal to the first output to drive the first output and the first drive signal may cause first induced noise in the second trace. Further, the second output driver may be configured to output a second drive signal based on the first drive signal where the second drive signal may reduce the magnitude of the first induced noise at the second output.

A data writer may be constructed and operated as part of a data storage device. The data writer can be positioned proximal a data storage medium. The data writer may have a write pole positioned adjacent a writer coil with the writer coil having a plurality of turns. A controller that is connected to each turn can be adapted to selectively activate less than all the coil turns in response to the data writer being positioned over a first portion of a data storage medium and selectively activate all of the coil turns in response to the data writer being positioned over a second portion of the data storage medium.

A method of testing a dynamic write field of a recording head includes preparing a test magnetic medium and recording a write signal on the test magnetic medium with the write signal being set at a first write parameter and a second write parameter. An average of multiple read-back signals of the recorded write signal are captured to determine an average amplitude of the read-back signals. The recording of the write signal on the test magnetic medium and the capturing of the average of multiple read-back signals of the recorded write signal are repeated to determine the average amplitude of the read-back signals by fixing the first write parameter of the write signal and changing the second write parameter of the write signal until the average amplitude of the read-back signals saturates.

The disclosed technology includes a storage device including an interlaced magnetic recording (IMR) system, and a transducer head, including two writers, each writer including a write pole, wherein a width of a first write pole in a cross-track direction is substantially greater than a width of a second write pole in the cross-track direction, and wherein a down-track width of a front shield gap of the first write pole is substantially similar to down-track width of a front shield gap of the second write pole. In another implementation, the storage device includes an IMR system, and a transducer head, including two writers, each writer including a write pole, wherein a width of the first write pole in a cross-track direction is substantially greater than a width of a second write pole in a cross-track direction, and wherein a cross-track width of a side shield gap of the first write pole is substantially similar to a cross-track width of a side shield gap of the second write pole.

A data writer may be configured with at least a write pole continuously extending from an air bearing surface to a via. The write pole can contact at least one yoke that contacts the write pole. The write pole and yoke may each be disposed between and separated from a write coil that has a single turn and continuously extends to opposite sides of the write pole.

A data storage device employing a data writer may configure the data writer with at least a write pole that is separated from a front shield on an air bearing surface. The front shield can be arranged to continuously extend from the air bearing surface a first throat height distal the write pole and a second throat height proximal the write pole with the first and second throat heights being different.

A data storage device may have one or more data writers that are configured with at least one write pole and shield. The write pole and shield can each be positioned on an air bearing surface. The shield may have first and second protrusions each extending from a shield body towards the write pole with the first protrusion positioned on the air bearing surface and the second protrusion separated from the air bearing surface and first protrusion by a lateral notch.
