A system for measuring a rise-over-thermal (RoT) characteristic in a communication network includes controlling a transmitting station to maintain its transmit power at a substantially constant level for a first time interval, and measuring a first received power level. The transmitting station is then controlled to adjust its transmit power by a selectable amount for a second time interval, and a second received power level is measured. The first and second received power levels are then processed to determine the RoT characteristic.

System for measuring a rise-over-thermal characteristic in a communication network

Interoperability between wireless communication systems, such as the IS2000-1x and IS856 systems, is facilitated by using supervision timers. A wireless communication device starts one or more supervision timers and performs an intersystem transition. When the wireless communication device returns from the transition, the supervision timers are used to estimate the duration of the transition. The wireless communication device then performs a sequence of tasks appropriate to the estimated duration.

Timing transitions between wireless communication systems

A quick paging channel (QPCH) is used to receive paging indicators that indicate that a wireless communication device (WCD) has a message on a paging channel relating to, for example, an incoming call to the WCD. When the condition of the quick paging channel is too low to receive paging indicators reliably, the quick paging channel is disabled to avoid false alarms, and the slotted paging channel is used to receive paging messages without monitoring the QPCH. When the QPCH signal is strong, the probability of false alarms is lower, and the quick paging channel is enabled. By using the quick paging channel to receive paging indicators only when the QPCH signal is strong, the wireless communication device can remain in a sleep state for greater periods of time as compared with the use of a slotted paging channel. As a result, standby time may be significantly improved.

Selecting paging channel mode

A wireless communication device performance, such as standby time, is improved by adaptively allocating surplus system resources to change quick paging channel parameters at the system, such a system being for example, a base station. Adaptively adjusting the quick paging channel parameters allows available base station resources to be allocated to the quick paging channel, thereby enabling the wireless communication device to demodulate the quick paging channel more reliably. Parameters such as the number of quick paging channels, the data rate used by the paging channel, and the quick paging channel transmit power level are weighed and adjusted.
