A surgical stapling device includes an outer tube having a proximal body portion and a distal channel portion. A distal end of the proximal body portion defines a pair of cutouts. An anvil assembly includes an anvil body defining a tissue contact surface and a pair of pivot members which are supported within the cutouts. A staple cartridge is supported in the distal channel portion of the outer tube and defines a tissue contact surface. The cutouts are dimensioned to allow movement of the pivot members within the cutouts to allow the tissue contact surface of the anvil body to move in relation to the tissue contact surface of the staple cartridge from a 'parked position' in which the tissue contact surfaces are in juxtaposed engagement to a “clamped position” in which the tissue contact surfaces defining a tissue gap. A drive member is provided that is formed from sheet metal and includes upper and lower extending members that are positioned to engage the anvil body and the distal channel portion to define a maximum tissue gap between the tissue contact surfaces of the anvil body and the staple cartridge.

A surgical stapling device includes a cartridge assembly including a staple pusher, a knife holder, a knife supported on the knife holder, and a biasing member. The biasing member is positioned between the staple pusher and the knife holder to prevent re-advancement of the knife blade after the stapling device is fired.

An end effector for a transverse type surgical stapling device includes an anvil assembly and a cartridge assembly. The cartridge assembly includes a knife assembly having a knife blade and a guide pin. The guide pin is movable between retracted and advanced positions to confine tissue between the anvil assembly and the cartridge assembly. The end effector includes a body that supports a guide member that is spaced from the guide pin. The guide member and the guide pin are positioned and configured to engage the knife blade when the stapling device is fired to more effectively cut tissue clamped between the anvil and cartridge assemblies.

A surgical stapling device includes an anvil assembly, a staple cartridge, and an outer tube having a proximal body portion and a distal channel portion. A distal end of the proximal body portion defines a pair of cutouts. The anvil assembly includes an anvil body having a pair of pivot members which are supported within the cutouts. A surgical stapling device includes an anvil assembly and a replaceable cartridge assembly. The cartridge assembly includes a knife blade and upper and lower alignment pins for retaining tissue between anvil and cartridge assemblies to ensure that the knife blade cuts cleanly through tissue. The cartridge assembly includes a cartridge body having guide structure for guiding the cartridge assembly onto a clamp slide assembly of the stapling device.

A surgical stapling device includes a tool assembly having a U-shaped frame, an anvil assembly, and a cartridge assembly. The U-shaped frame has a proximal transverse portion, a longitudinal portion, and a distal transverse portion. The distal transverse portion and the proximal transverse of the U-shaped frame and the cartridge assembly have a common shape including a first linear portion defining a first axis, a second linear portion defining a second axis, and a third linear portion defining a third axis, the first axis being transverse to the longitudinal axis of the elongate body. In embodiments, a first radius of curvature is defined between the first linear portion and the second linear portion such that the first axis and the second axis define an angle &#x3b2;, and a second radius of curvature is defined between the second linear portion and the third linear portion such that the second axis and the third axis define an angle &#x3a9;.
