An apparatus and method for detecting a presence of a conductive object on a sensing device, and recognizing three or more button operations performed by the conductive object using two sensing areas of the sensing device. The sensing device may include first, second, and third sensor elements. The third sensor element may include two electrically isolated portions coupled to the first and second sensor elements.

A method and apparatus to determine capacitance variations of a first number of two or more sense elements of a touch screen device. A processing device is configured to detect a presence of a conductive object on any one of a second number of three or more button areas of the touch screen device. The first number of sense elements is less than the second number of button areas. The processing device is further configured to recognize an activation of one of the three or more button areas using the determined capacitance variations of the first number of two or more sense elements.

Apparatus and methods for detecting a conductive object at a location

An apparatus and method for selecting a keyboard key based on a position of a presence of a conductive object on a sensing device and a pre-defined area of the keyboard key. The apparatus may include a sensing device and a processing device. The sensing device may include a plurality of sensor elements to detect a presence of a conductive object on the sensing device. Multiple keyboard keys are assigned to pre-defined areas of the sensing device. The processing device is coupled to the sensing device using capacitance sensing pins, and may be operable to determine a position of the presence of the conductive object, and to select a keyboard key based on the position of the conductive object and the pre-defined areas of the sensing device.

An apparatus and method for reducing charge time and power consumption of a sensor element of a sensing device. The apparatus may include a sensor element of a sensing device that has a surface area of conductive material and one or more gaps in the conductive material. The sensor element may include a plurality of evenly-spaced, parallel bars of conductive material and a plurality of interconnect lines coupled to the evenly-spaced, parallel bars to form the one or more gaps in the conductive material of the sensor element.

A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for providing a touch-sensor device. In one embodiment, the method includes receiving data indicative of movement of a conductive object on a first area of a touch-sensor device. The method further includes detecting data indicative of a presence of the conductive object in one of a plurality of one dimensional positions on a second area of the touch-sensor device, the second area being different than the first area, and determining in which one of the plurality of one dimensional positions is the presence detected.

Capacitance sensing matrix for keyboard architecture

An example method includes measuring a capacitance variation of a first conductive element and a capacitance variation of a second conductive element. The example method includes calculating a centroid position through the measured capacitance variation of the first conductive element and the measured capacitance variation of the second conductive element. A conductive sub-element of the first conductive element may be interleaved with a conductive sub-element of the second conductive element. The conductive sub-element of the first conductive element and the conductive sub-element of the second conductive element may each have a varying width.

A method and apparatus to detect a conductive object at a location determines a capacitance variation of a first sensor element and a capacitance variation of a second sensor element. The method and apparatus detects a touch at a first location if the capacitance variation of the first sensor element is greater than a reference value and the capacitance variation of the second sensor element is not greater than the reference value. The method and apparatus detects the touch at a second location if the capacitance variation of the first sensor element is not greater than the reference value and the capacitance variation of the second sensor element is greater than the reference value. The method and apparatus detects the touch at a third location if the capacitance variation of the first sensor element and the capacitance variation of the second sensor element are both greater than the reference value.

A method and apparatus is disclosed herein for mapping a touch sensing device to two sets of output objects. In one embodiment, the method includes mapping a first set of output objects into a plurality of one dimensional positions of a touch sensing device when a presence of a conductive object is determined to be in a first region, among a plurality of regions, of the touch sensing device. The method further includes mapping a second set of output objects into the plurality of one dimensional positions of the touch sensing device when the presence of the conductive object is determined to be in a second region, distinct from the first region, of the touch sensing device.
