A colored light source apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes light sources corresponding to active regions defined by defects in a photonic crystal structure, wherein the photonic crystal structure is based on periodic structures. The apparatus also includes a waveguide, a first electrode, and a second electrode. Varying electrical properties between the first and second electrodes stimulates radiation production in the active regions, wherein the radiation is at least partially coupled to and guided by the waveguide.

A method of manufacturing a periodic grating structure for a component. The method includes forming first structured layer including a final periodic grating structure of a first material and a second material filling spaces between individual features of the final periodic grating structure, removing the second material using a first chemical process and annealing a portion of the first material into a third material using a second chemical process.

Method for manufacturing layered periodic structures

In detecting presence of a gas, light passes through a photonic crystal cavity configured to sample a gas and receive light. The light has a wavelength that at least partially falls within a specific absorption wavelength of the gas. At least one parameter of a band gap spectrum is generated from at least a portion of the light passing through the photonic crystal cavity. In generating the at least one parameter, a numerical simulation is performed within a frequency range of the photonic crystal cavity to generate a set of spectral response data points, rational function interpolation is performed on the set of spectral response data points to generate a spectral response, and at least one parameter is determined from the spectral response. The at least one parameter is compared with stored parameters of band gap spectrums, wherein a match indicates a presence and/or concentration of the gas.
