The present invention provides a system and method for protecting data stored in the control registers of an integrated circuit, such as a television chip. The system and method use one or more selectively activated read protection modules to prevent the control registers from being read unless a predetermined key or password is entered. The password or key may be stored in password registers within the chip. A key access generator will enable read access of the control registers if correct values are written to the appropriate password registers. The key access generator may enable read access for a predetermined period of time or until it receives another input.

The present invention provides a system and method for automatically controlling the phase of the clock signal for sampling an HDTV signal, which implements a new and improved method for phase detection. The system and method utilize the standard format of an HDTV signal to consistently ensure accurate phase detection. This tri-level sync pattern or 'sync pulse' is well suited for phase detection since it includes several static areas separated by substantial transitions. A method and system for frame insertion in a digital display system is provided. The method is adapted for use with a liquid crystal display (LCD) type display and is effective to substantially reduce motion blur. The LCD display receives a sequence of digitized input frames at a first frequency. The method generates a sequence of output frames that include the digitized input frames interspersed with a plurality of modified frames. Each of the modified frames is substantially similar to a preceding digitized input frame, but has a reduced luminance. The modified frames may be generated by multiplying a preceding digitized input frame by a reduced luminance factor. The reduced luminance factor may be determined as a fixed value or as a function of an average pixel level of a preceding frame.

In one exemplary embodiment, there is provided a method of processing image data including analyzing first display information including pixel data indicative of pixel display on a graphical user interface, detecting one or more ramp steps in the pixel data, and assigning, in association with random number generation and/or threshold setting functionality, a carry possibility for a pixel adjacent the one or more ramp steps. Other exemplary implementations may include generating second display information included adjusted pixel data for pixels adjacent the ramp steps. Consistent with certain implementations, the second display information may include pixel values adjusted according to the carry possibility in one or both of the temporal domain and/or spatial domain.

A method and system is provided for reducing mosquito noise in a digital image. The method and system receives an input luminance value for a first pixel in the digital image, and determines whether the first pixel is in relative close proximity to an object appearing in the digital image, based on a comparison of the variation between the input luminance value for the first pixel and luminance values of a first plurality of neighboring pixels. If the first pixel is in relative close proximity to an object, the method performs an average filtering of the input luminance value for the first pixel, based on the luminance values of a second plurality of neighboring pixels, to provide a filtered luminance value for the first pixel.

A method of reducing mosquito noise in a digital image. As mosquito noise is often most plainly visible in the 'background' of an image (e.g., the sky or some other backdrop to objects within an image), the luminance value of the background of the image is first determined. Then, the luminances of the pixels of the image are compared against this 'background luminance' to determine which should be considered as part of this background. The luminances of these background pixels are then averaged so as to smooth out the representation of the background, and reduce mosquito noise.

The present invention provides a system and method for overlaying video from different video sources on a display device. The sources may include a primary video source that provides first image data in the form of a first video signal, and an overlay video source that provides second image data in the form of a second video signal and a fast blank signal. The system encodes the fast blank signal into the second video signal to form encoded image data. The fast blank signal can occupy one bit of the encoded image data. The system stores the first image data and the encoded image data in a frame buffer. A controller reads the first image data and the encoded image data from the frame buffer. The controller processes and decodes encoded image data, extracting the fast blank signal. The controller then uses the extracted fast blank signal to combine the second image data and the first image data, effective to overlay an image from the overly video source onto an image from the primary video source.

System and method for overlaying images from multiple video sources on a display device

An improved method and system for edge adaptive interpolation. The method uses a '9&#xd7;2' window to detect the edge direction with post-processing to remove any artifacts due to the possible false edge detection, and a hierarchical scheme is employed to reduce the computation required. The method detects if there is edge existing along the current pixel. If there is no edge, then the edge detection output will be 90 degrees (the interpolation will be performed along the vertical direction). If an edge does exist, the method determines whether the edge direction falls within a first or second direction group. Once the edge direction is assigned to a particular group (e.g., 0&#x2013;90 degrees or 90&#x2013;180 degrees), the edge direction will be detected among five (5) possible directions. To further improve the edge detection precision, and also to remove the possibility of false edge direction detection, a post-processing technique may be applied to the edge direction signal. After the edge signal post-processing, the edge direction information is then passed to an edge adaptive interpolation block to perform the interpolation along the edge direction detected. Still another post-processing technique may be applied to the edge adaptive interpolated signal to further remove the possible noise due to an incorrect edge direction detection.

Method and system for advanced edge-adaptive interpolation for interlace-to-progressive conversion

A method and system for edge-adaptive frame rate up-conversion are disclosed. One embodiment of the system of the present invention comprises: a capture block for receiving and processing an input signal; a frame buffer to receive and process a data signal output from the capture block; an edge-adaptive interpolator to generate an interpolated field signal from a set of current input field signals output from the frame buffer; a motion detector to receive a composite signal output from the frame buffer and to process the composite signal to generate a motion signal; a blender to receive a prior input field signal from the frame buffer, the interpolated field signal from the edge-adaptive interpolator, and the motion signal, and generate an edge and motion-interpolated field signal; a synchronization control block to process an input vertical synchronization signal received from the capture block and generate an output synchronization signal and an output field parity signal; a comparator to receive and compare the output field parity signal and an input field parity signal output from the capture block; and a multiplexer to select, based on the output of the comparator, and provide as an up-converted output signal, either one of the set of current input field signals output from the frame buffer or the edge and motion-interpolated field signal. The input signal can comprise a PAL video signal at 50 Hertz. The up-converted output signal can comprise, for example, a 60 Hertz PAL output signal or a 75 Hertz PAL output signal.
