Electronic devices, such as mobile communication devices, may include several enhancements and modification not found on traditional electronic devices. An electronic device can include a circuit board assembly that includes stacked layers of circuit components that are retained in a stacked configuration and operably connected to each other by retention features such as solder joints. Features can be provided for structural support and thermal mitigation. A battery assembly can accommodate nesting of other components, such as display components, within one or more recesses defined by variable thickness along different regions of the battery assemblies. The battery assembly can further provide a slim profile by including notches to accommodate the increased thickness of a pouch having folded flaps to seal a cell module of the battery assembly.

A disk drive having a hub comprising a top surface and a non-circular protrusion extending upward from the top surface, a disk clamp comprising a wall portion and a non-circular opening formed through the clamp, the opening configured to receive the non-circular protrusion extending upward from the top surface of the hub; and at least one disk supported by the hub, wherein the non-circular protrusion extending upward from the top surface of the hub is inserted into the opening formed in the clamp, and wherein an outer annular portion of the clamp engages the disk to provide clamping force.

A disk drive head gimbal assembly includes a laminated flexure with a tongue having an actuated portion that rotates about an axis of rotation by expansion of a first adhered piezoelectric element relative to a second adhered piezoelectric element. A non-actuated portion of the tongue adjoins and forms a bridge between two outrigger beams, with a dimple contact location that is in contact with a dimple of the load beam and through which the axis of rotation passes. A read head is adhered, closer to its leading end than to its trailing end, to the actuated portion of the tongue. Each of the first and second piezoelectric elements has an anchored end that is adhered to the bridge, closer to the trailing end of the read head, and an opposing actuated end adhered to the actuated portion of the tongue, closer to the leading end of the read head.

A disk drive head gimbal assembly includes a laminated flexure with a tongue having an actuated portion that rotates about an axis of rotation by expansion of an adhered piezoelectric element. A non-actuated portion of the tongue adjoins and forms a bridge between two outrigger beams, with a dimple contact location that is in contact with a dimple of the load beam and through which the axis of rotation passes. The piezoelectric element has an anchored end that is adhered to the non-actuated portion of the tongue, and an opposing actuated end adhered to the actuated portion. The actuated portion of the tongue includes first and second head mounting plates that are each adhered to the read head. Each of the head mounting plates is connected to the non-actuated portion of the tongue by an elongated compliant member that is oriented radially with respect to the dimple contact location.

Disk drive head suspension with a single piezoelectric element adhered to rotary-actuated and non-actuated portions of a structural layer of a tongue of a laminated flexure

A disk drive includes a voice coil actuator, and a rotary fine actuator that is attached to the head mounting tongue of the flexure of a suspension assembly. The head is positioned during operation of the disk drive by a novel method. An electrical current is driven through a coil of the voice coil actuator to torque it towards a desired coarse position. First and second voltages are applied across first and second piezoelectric elements attached to the flexure, respectively. The first and second voltages cause longitudinal deformation of the first and second piezoelectric elements, respectively, the longitudinal deformation consisting of expansion relative to a zero-voltage state. The first and second voltages do not switch polarity during normal operation of the first and second piezoelectric elements.

Method for fine actuation of a head during operation of a disk drive

A head gimbal assembly (HGA) for a disk drive includes a mounting plate configured to be attachable to an actuator arm, a load beam extending from the mounting plate, a laminated flexure, first and second piezoelectric elements, and a read head. The laminated flexure includes a fixed portion that is attached to the load beam, and a head mounting tongue that is connected to the fixed portion by first and second compliant members. The read head is bonded to the head mounting tongue. The laminated flexure also includes first and second piezoelectric element receiving windows, each adjacent a respective one of the first and second compliant members. The first and second piezoelectric elements are each disposed within a respective one of the first and second piezoelectric element receiving windows.

Described herein is a disk drive with a fluid bearing having a sleeve defining a bore that extends through a portion of the sleeve along an axis defined by the bore. The sleeve can have a first contact surface that extends in a direction transverse to the axis. A spindle is rotationally received within the bore, and the spindle and the sleeve permit relative rotational movement when the spindle is positioned within the bore. The spindle has a stopper with a second contact surface that extends in a direction transverse to the axis when the spindle is positioned within the bore. A portion of at least one of the first and second contact surfaces includes a softer material than that of the spindle and the bearing sleeve, and the first and second contact surfaces are configured to engage each other upon relative axial movement between the spindle and the sleeve.

A head gimbal assembly includes a rotary fine actuator attached to the head mounting tongue. The rotary fine actuator includes a fixed portion, a head mounting platform, first and second piezoelectric elements, and first and second curved compliant members. The first piezoelectric element is bonded to the fixed portion at a first bonding surface, and to the head mounting platform at a second bonding surface. The second piezoelectric element extends between the fixed portion and the head mounting platform. The first and second curved compliant members extend between the fixed portion and the head mounting platform. A read head is bonded to a mounting surface of the head mounting platform. The first and second bonding surfaces are parallel to the mounting surface. The read head is disposed between the first and second piezoelectric elements.

Disk drive suspension assembly with rotary fine actuator at flexure tongue

A disk drive head stack assembly includes an actuator arm tip that includes a swaging hole centered about a swaging axis. A first suspension assembly has a first swage boss that protrudes into the swaging hole. A second suspension assembly has a second swage boss that protrudes into the swaging hole and does not contact the first swage boss. Each of the first and second swage bosses includes an inner lip that extends radially closer to the swaging axis than any other part of that swage boss. The inner lip thickness of the first swage boss, measured parallel to the swaging axis, increases more greatly with increasing radial distance from the swaging axis than does the inner lip thickness of the second swage boss.

A C-shaped bobbin includes a bobbin base member adjacent and attached to a first lateral leg of an actuator coil. A bobbin recess, adjacent the bobbin base member, separates first and second bobbin wings. The first and second bobbin wings define first and second wing lengths measured parallel to first and second longitudinal legs of the coil, respectively, and also define first and second wing widths measured normal to the first and second longitudinal legs, respectively. The bobbin recess defines a recess depth measured normal to the first lateral leg, and defines a recess width measured parallel to the first lateral leg. Each of the first and second wing lengths is less than the length of the longitudinal legs. The recess depth is at least half a base member width. The recess width is at least twice the first wing width and/or the second wing width.

A disk drive has an actuator coil that includes first and second lateral legs joined by first and second longitudinal legs to form a closed coil periphery. The first lateral leg is disposed closer to the actuator pivot bore than the second lateral leg. The first and second longitudinal legs join the second lateral leg at a first interior bend location and at a second interior bend location within the closed coil periphery, respectively. A bobbin is disposed within the closed coil periphery and contacts the conductive coil at two locations (e.g. the first interior bend location and the second interior bend location). Preferably, the bobbin defines a total bobbin length and an average bobbin width, and the total bobbin length is at least 3 times the average bobbin width.

An actuator for a disk drive is disclosed. The actuator includes a plurality of arms including an upper outer arm, a lower outer arm, and at least one inner arm. The outer arms each include a region of reduced width and also include a region of increased thickness, both such regions being located closer to a proximal supported end of the outer arm than to its distal end. Each region of increased thickness has a minimum thickness that is more than the thickness of the inner arm at an equal distance from the axis. Each region of reduced width has a minimum width that is less than the minimum width of the inner arm at an equal distance from the axis.
