Embodiments pertain to an optical transmitter, including a thermally unregulated light emitting device and a sloped or graded passband filter. The light emitting device is configured to receive a bias current and output an optical signal within a wavelength band. The sloped or graded passband filter is configured to attenuate an output power of the optical signal in the wavelength band. The light emitting device has a maximum bias current limit, a maximum operating temperature limit, and maximum and minimum output power limits, and the sloped or graded passband filter has an insertion loss in the wavelength band that decreases as the light emitting device temperature increases and/or the optical signal wavelength increases within the wavelength band. The attenuated optical signal is within the maximum and minimum output power limits when the bias current is at or below the maximum bias current limit and the light emitting device outputs the optical signal at or below the maximum operating temperature limit.

Optical transmitter including a graded or sloped passband filter, and methods of making and using the same

A bidirectional optical subassembly, an optical transceiver including the same, and methods of making and using the same are disclosed. The optical subassembly includes a photodiode configured to receive an incoming optical signal, a transmitter configured to transmit an outgoing optical signal, and a passive optical signal processing unit including a filter and a mirror. The filter is at a first predetermined angle relative to an optical path of the outgoing optical signal and is configured to (i) reflect one of the outgoing optical signal and the incoming optical signal and (ii) allow the other of the outgoing optical signal and the incoming optical signal to pass through. The mirror is configured to reflect the one of the outgoing optical signal and the incoming optical signal at a second predetermined angle. The first predetermined angle is adapted to reduce filter insertion losses.

Transceiver with reduced filter insertion loss and methods of making and using the same

Optical multiplexers, optical demultiplexers, optical modules including the same, and methods of making and using the same are disclosed. The optical multiplexers include first and second structural blocks and a beam combiner. The first and second structural blocks each include at least one mirror and at least one filter, and are configured to combine a plurality of individual optical signals into a multi-channel optical signal. The beam combiner includes one or more mirrors and one or more filters, and is configured to combine the multi-channel optical signals into a further multi-channel optical output signal having the same number of channels as the multi-channel optical signals. The optical demultiplexers are structurally similar to the optical multiplexers, but provide a complementary or reverse function. The present multiplexers and demultiplexers reduce skew and/or accumulation of the geometric error over the channels in the multi-channel optical signal output from the multiplexer or input into the demultiplexer.

Multi-channel optical multiplexers and demultiplexers, optical transmitter, receiver and transceiver comprising the same, and methods of making and using the same

An optical or optoelectronic receiver and module, and methods of making and using the same, are disclosed. The receiver includes a photodetector, a first microelectromechanical device configured to reflect a multi-wavelength optical signal, a thin film filter configured to receive the multi-wavelength optical signal reflected by the first microelectromechanical device and separate a single-wavelength optical signal from the multi-wavelength optical signal, a first lens configured to focus the single-wavelength optical signal on the photodetector, and a second microelectromechanical device configured to reflect the single-wavelength optical signal towards the first lens. Each wavelength of the multi-wavelength optical signal represents or corresponds to a unique channel over which the receiver receives optical signals. The present receiver and methods enable low-cost, high-volume manufacturing of multi-channel optical or optoelectronic receivers.
