The microtome () includes a base () having a tank () filled with a bath () mounted thereon. A feeding mechanism () for feeding select amounts of specimen to be sectioned protrudes through the base () into the bath (). A cutting mechanism () spans the tank () and includes a reciprocating carriage () above the feeding mechanism (). The carriage () is disposed at an angle with respect to the direction of reciprocation and includes a vibrating blade () hanging down from the carriage (). The combined motion of the carriage () and the vibrating blade () slices samples from the specimen extruded by the feeding mechanism (), which permits consistent and uniformly thick samples with minimal surface irregularities, especially for large specimens. A controlling mechanism () coordinates operation of the feeding mechanism () and the cutting mechanism ().

Microtome

The method and device for cutting fresh tissue slices utilizes a vibrating microtome. The vibrating microtome uses a cutting blade that vibrates in a horizontal direction. The microtome has a base, a specimen holder attached to the base, and a diagonal slide carriage and support arm that are supported on the base for movement diagonally with respect to the specimen holder. A vibrating blade support is located on the support arm and moves horizontally with respect to the specimen holder. A cutting blade is mounted on the vibrating blade support and moves in a compound diagonal and vibrating motion with respect to the specimen holder.

Method and device for cutting fresh tissue slices

The sliding blade microtome is a tissue specimen cutting device including a specimen syringe and an adjustable cutting mechanism for diagonally slicing the specimen. The specimen syringe is a cylindrical shaft having a first end and a second end for holding and supporting a specimen. The first end has a diameter that is smaller than the diameter of the shaft, forming a compressed lip for applying pressure on the specimen prior to slicing by the blade. The pressure used to compress the gelatin and the specimen holds the gelatin and the specimen in a sturdy position to slice the specimen to precision without chatter marks. The specimen is pushed out of the first end of the specimen syringe by a motor mechanism or a manually adjustable micrometer drive.

Sliding blade microtome

The apparatus for preparing quartz micropipettes includes a pair of carriers mounted on a linear ball bearing guide which grasp opposite ends of a quartz glass capillary tube. A pair of miniature torches fueled by a mixture of oxygen and propane simultaneously heat a portion of the center of the capillary tube and an inverted U-shaped bar disposed between the torches in propinquity to the capillary tube. A cable having one end attached to one of the carriers and the other end attached to the core of a solenoid, the intermediate portion of the cable being wound around a pulley and attached to the second carrier, is used to pull the capillary tube in opposite directions as the tube softens. The cable is also wound around the axle of an optical encoder assembly which sends an electrical signal to a computer based upon either the distance or velocity at which the tubing is pulled apart. When the distance or velocity reaches a predetermined limit, the torches are shut off and the solenoid activated to separate the capillary tube into two symmetrically formed micropipettes, the U-shaped bar providing sufficient residual heat to ensure symmetry.
