A glass composition having a content of SiOthat is greater than or equal to about 44.0 mol. % and less than or equal to about 60.0 mol. % and a content of ZnO that is less than or equal to about 1.0 mol. %. Additionally, the glass composition is essentially free of Pb and Bi. The glass composition also has a refractive index that is greater than or equal to 1.75 and a density that is less than or equal to about 4.5 g/cm.

Glass compositions with high refractive indexes and low densities

A glass composition is provided that is capable of being ion exchanged to produce high central tension values. The glass composition includes SiO, LiO, and CaO. Glass-based articles formed by ion-exchanging glass-based substrates formed from the glass composition are also provided. The glass-based articles are characterized by a maximum central tension of greater than or equal to 150 MPa, and this maximum central tension value may be achieved by ion exchanging in a sodium containing molten salt bath. The glass-based articles may be utilized in consumer electronic devices.

Glass compositions with high central tension capability

Glasses containing silicon dioxide (SiO) and/or boron oxide (BO) as glass formers and having a refractive index nof greater than or equal to 1.7, as measured at 587.56 nm, and a density of less than or equal to 4.5 g/cm, as measured at 25° C., are provided. Optionally, the glasses may be characterized by a low optical dispersion, a high transmittance in the visible and near-ultraviolet (near-UV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum, and/or good glass forming ability.

Silicoborate and borosilicate glasses having high refractive index and low density

Glasses containing silicon dioxide (SiO) and/or boron oxide (BO) as glass formers and having a refractive index nof greater than or equal to 1.80, as measured at 587.56 nm, a density of less than or equal to 5.5 g/cm, as measured at 25° C., and a high transmittance to, particularly to blue light, are provided. Optionally, the glasses may be characterized by a high transmittance in the visible and near-ultraviolet (near-UV) range of the electromagnetic spectrum and/or good glass forming ability.

Silicoborate and borosilicate glasses having high refractive index and high transmittance to blue light

Glass compositions including 50 mol % to 65 mol % SiO, 13 mol % to 20 mol % AlO, 6 mol % or more BO, 0 mol % to 5 mol % MgO, 0 mol % to 2 mol % CaO, 8 mol % to 14 mol % LiO, 0 mol % to 4 mol % NaO, and 0 mol % to 1 mol % KO, where AlOmol %>RO+R'O−3 mol %. The glass compositions may have a Kvalue of 0.75 MPa*mor more measured by a chevron short bar method. The glass compositions may be used in a glass article or consumer electronic product.

Boron-containing glass compositions having high fracture toughness

A glass comprising greater or equal to 30.0 mol % SiO, the glass being free of iron, lead, antimony ant tantalum oxides, and having a refractive index ngreater than or equal to 1.75 and a linear thermal expansion coefficient α, in the temperature range 20-300° C., that is less than or equal to about 65×10K.

High index low density glass

A glass composition includes: greater than or equal to 55 mol % and less than or equal to 70 mol % SiO; greater than or equal to 14 mol % and less than or equal to 25 mol % AlO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % BO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % PO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % and less than or equal to 10 mol % LiO; greater than or equal to 6.5 mol % and less than or equal to 20 mol % NaO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % KO; greater than or equal to 0.1 mol % and less than or equal to 4.5 mol % MgO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % CaO; and greater than or equal to 0 mol % SrO. The sum of LiO, NaO, and KO in the glass composition may be greater than or equal to 6.5 mol % and less than or equal to 22 mol %. The glass composition may satisfy the relationship AlO*(2.94)+BO*(−0.58)+PO*(−3.87)+LiO*(5.01)+NaO*(1.89)+KO*(−2.03) is greater than 100.

Glass compositions having improved mechanical durability and low characteristic temperatures

A glass composition comprises: 50.0 mol % to 70.0 mol % SiO; 10.0 mol % to 25.0 mol % AlO; 0.0 mol % to 5.0 mol % PO; 0.0 mol % to 10.0 mol % BO; 5.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % LiO; 1.0 mol % to 15.0 mol % NaO; and 0.0 mol % to 1.0 mol % KO. The sum of all alkali oxides, RO, present in the glass composition may be in the range from greater than or equal to 11.0 mol % to less than or equal to 23.0 mol %. The sum of AlOand RO present in the glass composition may be in the range from greater than or equal to 26.0 mol % to less than or equal to 40.0 mol %. The glass composition may satisfy the relationship −0.1≤(AlO—(RO+RO))/LiO≤0.3.

Ion exchangeable alkali aluminosilicate glass compositions having improved mechanical durability

A glass composition includes: greater than or equal to 24 mol % and less than or equal to 60 mol % SiO; greater than or equal to 23 mol % and less than or equal to 35 mol % AlO; greater than or equal to 3.5 mol % and less than or equal to 35 mol % BO; greater than 0 mol % and less than or equal to 20 mol % LiO; greater than or equal to 0 mol % and less than or equal to 10 mol % NaO; and greater than or equal to 0 mol % and less than or equal to 3 mol % KO. The sum of LiO, NaO, and KO (i.e., RO) in the glass composition may be greater than or equal to 12 mol % and less than or equal to 20 mol %.

Tunable glass compositions having improved mechanical durability

A colored glass article includes greater than or equal to 50 mol % and less than or equal to 80 mol % SiO; greater than or equal to 7 mol % and less than or equal to 25 mol % AlO; greater than or equal to 1 mol % and less than or equal to 15 mol % BO; greater than or equal to 5 mol % and less than or equal to 20 mol % LiO; greater than or equal to 0.5 mol % and less than or equal to 15 mol % NaO; greater than 0 mol % and less than or equal to 1 mol % KO; and greater than or equal to 1×10mol % and less than or equal to 1 mol % Au. RO—AlOis greater than or equal to −5 mol % and less than or equal to 7 mol %, RO being the sum of LiO, NaO, and KO.

Colored glass articles having improved mechanical durability

A glass composition includes greater than or equal to 60 mol % to less than or equal to 66 mol % SiO, greater than or equal to 14 mol % to less than or equal to 16 mol % AlO, greater than or equal to 7 mol % to less than or equal to 9 mol % LiO, greater than or equal to 4 mol % to less than or equal to 6 mol % NaO, greater than or equal to 0.5 mol % to less than or equal to 3 mol % PO, greater than or equal to 0.5 mol % to less than or equal to 6 mol % BO; and greater than 0 mol % to less than or equal to 1 mol % TiO. The glass composition may have a fracture toughness of greater than or equal 0.75 MPa√m. A glass composition includes SiO, AlO, LiO, NaO, PO, and BO, wherein a molar ratio of LiO/NaO is greater than or equal to 1.2 to less than or equal to 2.0, the glass has a liquidus viscosity in the range from greater than or equal to 50 kP to less than or equal to 75 kP, and the glass has a Kfracture toughness greater than or equal to 0.75 MPa·m. The glass composition is chemically strengthenable. The glass composition may be used in a glass-based article or a consumer electronic product.

Ion exchangeable glasses having high fracture toughness

A glass composition includes: SiO, greater than 0 mol % to less than or equal to 24 mol % AlO, BO, KO, greater than or equal to 10 mol % to less than or equal to 38 mol % MgO, NaO, and LiO. The glass composition may have a fracture toughness of greater than or equal 0.80 MPa&#x221a;m and a Young's modulus of greater than or equal to 80 GPa to less than or equal to 120 GPa. The glass composition is chemically strengthenable. The glass composition may be used in a glass article or a consumer electronic product.

Magnesium aluminosilicate glasses with high fracture toughness

Glasses containing silicon dioxide (SiO) and/or boron oxide (BO) as glass formers and having a refractive index nof greater than or equal to 1.9, as measured at 587.56 nm, and a density of less than or equal to 5.5 g/cm, as measured at 25&#xb0; C., are provided.
