A multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) communications system is provided for conveying signals over a MIMO channel. The system includes a precoder for precoding a signal based upon a uniform channel decomposition scheme. The system further comprises a transmitter in communication with the precoder for conveying the precoded signal over a subchannel of the MIMO channel.

Uniform channel decomposition for MIMO communications

A method for detecting breast cancer can include the step of positioning a transmitting antenna and a receiving antenna about a breast so that the transmitting antenna is positioned to transmit microwave energy into the breast and the receiving antenna is positioned to receive the transmitted energy after the energy has passed into the breast. Microwave energy can be transmitted from the transmitting antenna. The microwave energy can be received by the receiving antenna and used to determine a presence of tumors within the breast. A relative position of the transmitting antenna and the receiving antenna can be adjusted about the breast. After each position adjustment, the transmitting and the receiving steps can be repeated.

Breast cancer detection system

A method and system for examining biological tissue includes the steps of radiating a tissue region with a plurality of microwave radiation pulses. The microwave pulses are swept across a range of microwave frequencies. In response to the swept frequency microwave pulses, the tissue region emits a plurality of thermoacoustic signals. At least one image of the tissue region is formed from the plurality of thermoacoustic signals. The signals can be ultrawideband signals.

Multi-frequency microwave-induced thermoacoustic imaging of biological tissue

A forwarding looking ground penetrating mine detection apparatus includes a radiation source for irradiating a sample of ground suspected of containing at least one mine with a plurality of frequency swept ground penetrating radar signals. A detector receives target signals backscattered from the ground responsive to the radar signal. The detector includes a time-frequency analyzer which transforms the target signals into a time-frequency image representation (TFR). In a preferred embodiment, the detector can include a wavelet packet transformer (WPT) for extracting time-frequency localized information from the TFR in the form of feature set constructed from a wavelet table. The apparatus can also include a data dimensionality reducer for selecting features to form a feature subset from the feature set, preferably based on reference to a training data set. A multilayer neural network classifier can be based on the feature subset, and be adaptable to the surrounding environment through learning.

Land mine detector

A system and method for enhancing the data rate of a WLAN. Through the deployment of a MIMO system, the data rate ordinarily expected of a SISO type system can be doubled. Yet, the MIMO system of the present invention can remain backward compatible with conventional WLAN standards implemented by typical SISO type system. In particular, the packet preamble of the MIMO packet of the present invention is similar to that of a conventional SISO system so as to be backward compatible with conventional SISO receivers. Additionally, the data model of the MIMO system can be configured to support the detection of symbols in the MIMO packet of the present invention. Importantly, the present invention can include a least squares soft-detector for use in a wireless LAN compatible MIMO system.

Wireless LAN compatible multi-input multi-output system

A method for enhanced Capon beamforming includes the steps of providing a sensor array including a plurality of sensor elements where an array steering vector corresponding to a signal of interest (SOI) is unknown. A covariance matrix fitting relation is bounded for the unknown array steering vector by constraining the array steering vector using a constant norm and a spherical uncertainty set. The matrix fitting relation is then solved to provide an estimate of said array steering vector.

Doubly constrained robust capon beamformer

A method for enhanced Capon beamforming, referred to herein as an advanced robust Capon beamformer (advanced RCB), includes the steps of providing a sensor array including a plurality of sensor elements, wherein an array steering vector corresponding to a signal of interest (SOI) is unknown. The array steering vector is represented by an ellipsoidal uncertainty set. A covariance fitting relation for the array steering vector is bounded with the uncertainty ellipsoid. The matrix fitting relation is solved to provide an estimate of the array steering vector.
