A method for triggering a group of one or more detached wireless communication devices () to attach to a wireless communications network () for enabling data communications is disclosed. A trigger request message including a group identifier, size information for the group, and location information for the one or more wireless communication devices () is received () at the network (). Based on this information, the network () determines () a delay time period during which the one or more wireless communication devices () are to transmit an access request message to the network () when triggered to attach to the network. The delay time period is based on the size of the group. During a trigger period, the delay time period and group identifier is transmitted () to the one or more wireless communication devices () in a trigger message. A wireless communication device () is also described.

A base station receives () OFDMA messages from a plurality of end user platforms that share all used tones within at least one OFDMA symbol. By one approach this base station then uses () a fixed starting time to select contiguous samples from received aggregate multi-user signals wherein the fixed starting time is offset from a reference time that comprises a time at which the base station expects to be receiving the signals from all end users. A wireless transceiver () that produces soft decisions for received, block error correction encoded codewords and a confidence indicator signifying a likelihood of errors in the detected data. The wireless transceiver () processes block encrypted signals, such as feedback channel messages in a WiMax uplink. Upon receiving a signal, a soft decision is determined for received block encoded codewords. A difference is calculated between a soft decision metric for a most likely detected codeword and a soft decision metric for a next most likely detected codeword. This difference is normalized based upon the total decoder input power received over the received signal (). The normalized difference is then scaled by a channel dependent factor and is time filtered. The normalized and time filtered confidence indicator output () is able to be provided to a wireless network controller to assess the usability of the received data.

A method for selecting at least one operating parameter of a communication system (). The method can include determining a receive signal strength indicator (RSSI) for a communication signal (). An intermediate value (D) for the communication signal can be determined based on, at least in part, a received value (r) of at least one known datum, a predetermined value (p) of the known datum and a channel estimate ({tilde over (h)}). Further, a carrier to interference and noise ratio (CINR) can be estimated based on, at least in part, the RSSI and the intermediate value. The operating parameter can be selected based on, at least in part, the estimated CINR.

According to the present invention there is provided a method of transmitting user data in a TDMA system in which the number of channels is increased by partitioning at least one time-slot in a TDMA frame into at least two sub-time-slots. Each sub time-slot may be allocated to a different user. User data may be transmitted in each time slot in a burst structure, user data being transmitted in each sub time-slot in a corresponding burst structure. User data may be transmitted in each time slot in a burst structure having n bits and wherein each time slot is partitioned into m sub time slots, user data being transmitted in each sub time-slot in a corresponding burst structure having n/m bits.

A method of transmitting speech frames in a TDMA network in which at least one time-slot of the TDMA frame is allocated to at least two users. The two sets of data bits may each include a header portion and a payload portion, the payload portion comprising encoded speech. The encoding step may be a channel encoding step for encoding the at least two sets of data bits for transmission on a packet switched network. The data bits may be for transmission on an EDGE packet switched network, wherein the at least two sets of data bits are encoded into a single RLC/MAC block.
