A wind or gas velocity profiler integrated with micromachined (a.k.a. MEMS, Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) silicon sensors in an open or enclosed space is disclosed in the present invention. There are three main embodiments disclosed in the present invention. Through the preambles of the independent claims, the advantages and merits of such measurement apparatus with MEMS flow sensor will be demonstrated as well. A silicon-based MEMS flow sensor can greatly reduce the sensor fabrication cost by a batch production. The integration with MEMS flow sensor makes the invented anemometer operate in the ways of better measurement accuracy, lower power consumption, higher reliability and a compact dimension compared to traditional anemometers such as cup anemometer, thermal anemometer and ultrasonic anemometer.

Nowadays many electronic devices, such as LCD projector, computer servers, and air fresher etc. require reliable air cooling system to reduce the risk of electronics damage caused by overheating. The present invention disclosed an apparatus integrated with air flow sensor as an alarm apparatus for air flow clog detection. The major prior approach for air flow circulation failure detection is based on an indirect measurement method of temperature monitoring on surrounding environments, which method is suffering from the slow response and poor identification of real-time situation. The present invention will demonstrate the advantages by directly monitoring air flow over by indirectly monitoring the surrounding temperature as for the purpose of preventing air flow path clog.

A glass-ceramic substrate for magnetic recording media is textured employing a continuous wave laser light beam to uniformly heat a surface zone, thereby forming a continuously roughened zone defined by recrystallized microcrystals. Embodiments include impinging a continuous wave CO laser light beam on a rotating glass-ceramic substrate to uniformly heat an annular zone at a temperature between the crystallization temperature and melting point of the glass-ceramic substrate followed by air cooling to induce a continuous surface roughness having an Ra of about 5 &angst; to about 20 &angst;, thereby enabling a glide height of about 0.2 to 0.5 &mgr; in.

A magnetic recording medium is formed with a distribution of laser micromachined servo-marks in the form of pits or indentations with an attendant reduction in servo-tracking area and increased data-recording speed. Embodiments include laser texturing to form a radially extending linear or arcuate series of circular or elliptical pits across the data zone. The micromachined servo-marks are detected by mechanical or electrical means and denote the beginning and end of magnetically recorded servo-information in a data track, thereby enabling accurate and timely positioning of the read/write head by the servo-controller of the hard drive.

Laser-scribing brittle substrates along a curvilinear path is effected by impinging and moving at least two laser light beam spots along the substrate surface, the first spot preheating the substrate and the second smaller spot heating the substrate to the laser-scribing temperature below the softening temperature of the substrate. Embodiments include forming dual spots employing a crystal material or employing dual fiber optic cables each optically linked to a lens. In another embodiment, three spot lasers spots are formed employing a three-spot diffractive lens, the third spot formed behind the second laser-scribing spot and heating the surface to a temperature lower than the laser-scribing temperature. Embodiments further include laser-scribing substantially circular glass, ceramic or glass-ceramic substrates for magnetic recording media.

Magnetic data storage disks, particularly along dedicated transducing head contact regions, are laser textured according to a process in which beam shaping optical components impart an elliptical or otherwise elongated cross-section to the laser beam. Consequently, individual texturing features such as rims and nodules are elliptical or elongate, with more gradual height gradients in directions parallel to their major axes. The texturing features further are oriented with respect to the direction of transducing head accelerations and decelerations, which yields high performance in terms of reduced dynamic friction, reduced stiction and better wear characteristics. Texturing features are formed in a variety of patterns, including patterns with adjacent features contacting one another. A further refinement involves forming features with substantially different slopes on opposites sides of a maximum height region.

A magnetic recording medium is formed with enhanced tribological performance by applying a raw, unfractionated lubricant having a wide molecular weight distribution over a disk surface and treating the deposited lubricant with a laser light beam to effect in-situ fractionation of the lubricant to a very narrow molecular weight distribution. Embodiments of the present invention also include laser treating a deposited lubricant to increase the thickness of the bonded lube layer.

Stiction failure of a magnetic recording medium is reduced by forming a lubricant topcoat having a first thickness over the landing zone greater than a second thickness over the data zone, with a sharp transition step having an angle of at least about 70&deg; with respect to a line perpendicular to the surface. Embodiments include depositing a lubricant topcoat at a substantially uniform thickness and reducing the thickness of the lubricant topcoat over the data zone by about 20% to about 80% employing a laser light beam to volatilize the lubricant.

A magnetic data storage medium is provided that has a substrate surface with regularly spaced, continuous ridges and grooves thereby to enhance the magnetic layer crystallization orientation. Data storage tracks extend longitudinally along the ridges, the grooves between adjacent ridges providing separation between data tracks on either side of each ridge. To form the substrate surface a focused laser beam is continuously applied to the substrate in a path of generally circumferential direction on the disk surface between inner and outer radii of a data storage zone while the substrate is rotated at a relatively constant first speed and the focused beam is moved radially at a relatively constant second speed.

The substrate of a magnetic recording medium is laser textured employing a fiber-optic laser delivery system. Fiber optic cables are optically linked at one end to a laser light beam source, and at the other lens to a microfocusing lens. The use of a fiber optic cable delivery system facilitates alignment and reduces maintenance.
