A system for an internal combustion engine, the engine having an intake and exhaust manifold, the system comprising of a heat exchanger configured to extract energy from engine exhaust gases; a catalyst coupled between said heat exchanger and the exhaust manifold of the engine; a spark plug in a cylinder of the engine; and a controller to operate the engine to perform spark ignition of a mixture of air and fuel in said cylinder during an engine cold start, where said air is heated with the energy before being inducted into said cylinder.

Method and system embody a valve timing strategy to control the autoignition timing of a four stroke internal combustion engine () operated in an HCCI mode at different engine operating conditions such as different engine speed and torque. A particular valve timing strategy varies lift timing of the intake valve () relative to the exhaust valve (), or vice versa, and relative to top dead center in response to a change in engine torque, for example, to vary amount of trapped residual burned gas in the combustion chamber () flowing to an intake or exhaust port () and back to the combustion chamber during which the residual gas is cooled. Control of the flow of residual gas between the combustion chamber and intake or exhaust port and thus its temperature by the valve timing strategy, in turn, is used to control the temperature of the fresh air/residual gas/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber () and thus autoignition timing in response to a change in engine torque.

Control of autoignition timing in a HCCI engine

A free piston engine is configured with a pair of opposed engine cylinders located on opposite sides of a fluid pumping assembly. An inner piston assembly includes a pair of inner pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with a push rod connected between the inner pistons. The push rod extends through an inner pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. An outer piston assembly includes a pair of outer pistons, one each operatively located in a respective one of the engine cylinders, with at least one pull rod connected between the outer pistons. The pull rod extends through an outer pumping chamber in the fluid pumping assembly and forms a fluid plunger within this chamber. The movement of the inner and outer piston assemblies during engine operation will cause the fluid plungers to pump fluid from a low pressure container into a high pressure chamber as a means of storing the energy output from the engine. Alternatively, the piston assemblies may drive a linear alternator. Each fuel injector is located so that it injects directly into its cylinder near the intake ports, while also being covered during combustion events in order to avoid exposing the fuel injector to the harsh environment of combustion.

A method for controlling torque in an internal combustion engine to cause an increase in temperature in an exhaust aftertreatment device is disclosed. One group cylinders feed exhaust gases to one exhaust aftertreatment device and another group of cylinders feed exhaust gases to another exhaust aftertreatment device. By operating the groups of cylinders at different operating conditions, the desired temperature in one of the exhaust aftertreatment devices can be achieved while also providing driver demanded torque.

A method and system for controlling combustion mode in an internal combustion engine is disclosed. A method for controlling a multi-cylinder internal combustion engine includes operating a portion of the cylinders according to a first combustion mode and operating a second portion of the cylinders according to a second, different combustion mode. The net torque produced by the cylinders equals driver demanded torque. By this invention, a first combustion mode, which has a desirable combustion characteristic such as high fuel economy or low emissions, but which cannot provide driver demanded torque if used in all cylinders, can be used in combination with a second combustion mode, thereby meeting driver demand for torque and gleaning the benefits of the first combustion mode.

Method and system for controlling combustion mode in an internal combustion engine

An intake/exhaust system and a method of controlling intake air temperature and pressure for a dual-mode homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine is provided. The system may include an air compressor including at least two output air flow paths, an intercooler for cooling air from one of the air flow paths, and heat exchangers for heating air from another one of the air flow paths. Control valves may be provided for controlling the mass ratio of air through the air flow paths to thereby control temperature and pressure of air supplied to the engine. The first air flow path may direct air to the engine via the intercooler and the second air flow path may direct air to the engine via the heat exchangers, whereby, air at first and second controlled temperatures and pressures may be supplied to the engine for operation in SI and HCCI modes.

HCCI engine intake/exhaust systems for fast inlet temperature and pressure control with intake pressure boosting

An inlet air compressor for an internal combustion engine is provided which has one inlet and a plurality of outlets. Within the compressor are disposed a plurality of diffusers coupled to the plurality of outlets. The flow is divided among the plurality of outlets so that at conditions of low overall flow rate through the engine, which would, in a compressor according to the prior art, ordinarily surge, allow the flow to be substantially discontinued through one or more diffusers and continue at through the remaining diffusers. In this way, the diffusers with flow operate within an acceptable operating range and avoid a surging condition. The present invention is directed to engines having a wide range of flow rates. A couple of examples are gasoline engines and variable displacement engines.

An apparatus and a method for producing homogeneous charge compression ignition within a cylinder by the controlled introduction of material into the cylinder when the piston reaches a top dead center position. The material may have a relatively high temperature and pressure and may comprise superheated water.

Method and apparatus for creating homogeneous charge compression ignition

Within each of: (1) an internal combustion engine system; (2) a transportation vehicle which incorporates the internal combustion engine system; and (3) a method for operating the internal combustion engine system, there is employed: (1) an internal combustion engine having a minimum of one combustion chamber; (2) a gas compressor absent an associated compressed gas tank, where the gas compressor is driven by a power output of the internal combustion engine; and (3) a controller programmed for providing a compressed gas charge from the gas compressor to the minimum of one combustion chamber during a portion of a compression cycle within the minimum of one combustion chamber, but not including a beginning portion of the compression cycle within the minimum of one combustion chamber. Each of the internal combustion engine system, transportation vehicle and method provides enhanced internal combustion engine performance and economy.
