Presented herein are methodologies for implementing a system and apparatus to estimate a network disruption index and undertake a mitigation action accordingly. A method includes calculating a network disruption index based on at least a disruption score associated with a service request measure, an end-of-life measure, a security incident response measure and a return material authorization measure for respective hardware devices in a network, comparing the network disruption index to a predetermined threshold, and when the network disruption index is above the predetermined threshold, identifying one or more of the hardware devices in the network for a mitigation action and implementing the mitigation action.

System and method to estimate network disruption index

A method and apparatus for self-monitoring to identify an occurrence of a threshold and rebooting in response to the occurrence of the threshold is provided. In an embodiment, a data processing apparatus comprises one or more processors; logic coupled to the one or more processors and comprising one or more stored sequences of instructions which, when executed by one or more processors, cause the one or more processors to obtain a threshold associated with the apparatus; self-monitor the apparatus to identify an occurrence of the threshold; and self-reboot the apparatus responsive to the occurrence of the threshold.

Self-restarting network devices

Normalization of a network performance index is achieved. Data is stored that groups devices in a network into groups or families according to their estimated life cycles. Data is stored representing a group-specific time window based on the estimated life cycle for devices in that group. Data is stored representing a count of the number of devices in the network within each group during a given unit of time, dynamic sliding windows over successive units of time. A sliding window group count is generated that represents the number of devices within each group in the network as of a current unit of time and prior units of time within the group-specific time window. A total group count is generated by adding the dynamic sliding window group counts for each of the groups. A normalized network performance index is generated by dividing a network performance index by the total group count.

Normalizing network performance indexes

A network device has at least two communication ports to allow the device to communicate with at least two telephony devices. The device has a ring manager to determine if any of the communication ports are silent ports ready to transition from silent to ringing, determine if there is power available to transition the silent ports to ringing ports, transition silent ports to ringing ports until an amount of available power is depleted, and queue remaining silent ports until power becomes available, such that silent ports in the queue may experience cadence distortion.

Ringing for power system management

A network device and a method for monitoring operational messages is described. The method comprises monitoring an occurrence of an operational message of the network device, and storing dynamic context information at the time that the operational message occurred. The stored dynamic context information is then associated with the operational message. The operational message (e.g., a syslog message) may be stored together with the dynamic context information in a metalog memory and may comprise a snapshot of a procedure stack, the procedure stack including information indicative of a sequence of procedure invocations.

System diagnostics with dynamic contextual information of events

A system and method are disclosed for controlling access networks directly via a packet network gateway that is itself controlled by a remote call agent. In one embodiment, the gateway performs translation between access network protocol signaling and gateway control protocol messaging such that, to the call agent, the gateway appears to be physically connected to a group of subscribers directly, and to the access network, the gateway appears to function as a circuit-switched network. In one application, a gateway according to the present invention thus allows existing access network devices to connect directly to a packet network without having to pass through an intervening PSTN circuit switch.
