The present invention generally relates to nanoscale wires and nanoelectronics, which in some aspects may be embedded in biological structures, such as tissues, organoids, organs, organisms, and the like. For example, one aspect is generally directed to stretchable cell scaffolds, which may be connected to electrical circuits. In some cases, a biological structure may form around the scaffold and deform the cell scaffold as it forms, thereby causing the cell scaffold to become embedded within the biological structure. The scaffold may be connectable in certain embodiments to an external device, e.g., to determine a property of the cell scaffold (e.g., an electrical property), and/or to apply a stimulus (e.g., an electrical stimulus) to the biological structure. Other aspects of the invention are generally directed to methods of making or using such cell scaffolds, kits including such cell scaffolds, biological structures containing such cell scaffolds, or the like.

Cell scaffold comprising an electronic circuit

Articles and devices comprising fluorinated elastomers, as well as methods of preparing fluorinated elastomers, are generally described. In some cases, such fluorinated elastomers can be used for sensing neural activity, e.g., by encapsulating electronic circuits, or other applications. Furthermore, according to certain embodiments, polymers can, surprisingly, be directly deposited onto layers comprising low molecular weight fluorinated elastomers, e.g., without swelling in the presence of certain solvents. Some embodiments are generally directed to devices and methods for treating fluorinated elastomers and subsequently depositing material onto the treated fluorinated elastomers. This may allow the fabrication and patterning of multilayered articles comprising fluorinated elastomers.

Fluorinated elastomers for brain probes and other applications

Articles and devices comprising fluorinated polymers, as well as methods of preparing fluorinated polymers, are generally described. In some cases, such fluorinated elastomers can be used for sensing neural activity, e.g., by encapsulating electronic circuits, or other applications. Furthermore, according to certain embodiments, polymers can, surprisingly, be directly deposited onto layers comprising low molecular weight fluorinated polymers, e.g., without swelling in the presence of certain solvents. Some embodiments are generally directed to devices and methods for treating fluorinated polymers and subsequently depositing material onto the treated fluorinated polymers. This may allow the fabrication and patterning of multilayered articles comprising fluorinated elastomers.

The present invention generally relates to nanoscale wires and tissue engineering. In various embodiments, cell scaffolds for growing cells or tissues can be formed that include nanoscale wires that can be connected to electronic circuits extending externally of the cell scaffold. The nanoscale wires may form an integral part of cells or tissues grown from the cell scaffold, and can even be determined or controlled, e.g., using various electronic circuits. This approach allows for the creation of fundamentally new types of functionalized cells and tissues, due to the high degree of electronic control offered by the nanoscale wires and electronic circuits. Accordingly, such cell scaffolds can be used to grow cells or tissues which can be determined and/or controlled at very high resolutions, due to the presence of the nanoscale wires, and such cell scaffolds will find use in a wide variety of novel applications, including applications in tissue engineering, prosthetics, pacemakers, implants, or the like.

Scaffolds comprising nanoelectronic components for cells, tissues, and other applications

The present invention generally relates to nanoscale wires and tissue engineering. Systems and methods are provided in various embodiments for preparing cell scaffolds that can be used for growing cells or tissues, where the cell scaffolds comprise nanoscale wires. In some cases, the nanoscale wires can be connected to electronic circuits extending externally of the cell scaffold. Such cell scaffolds can be used to grow cells or tissues which can be determined and/or controlled at very high resolutions, due to the presence of the nanoscale wires, and such cell scaffolds will find use in a wide variety of novel applications, including applications in tissue engineering, prosthetics, pacemakers, implants, or the like.
