A photonic device such as a polarization controller includes a coupler, such as a 2&#xd7;2 MMI coupler, or a series of such couplers. Couplers may be interspersed with other components such as phase shifters. Photodetectors such as photodiodes are coupled to input and output lines of the coupler or couplers, for example via taps. In various embodiments, all of the couplers include photodetectors monitoring light power for at least two of their inputs and outputs, and at least one of the couplers includes photodetectors monitoring at least three of its inputs and outputs. The arrangement of photodetectors can provide sufficient information for feedback control of the photonic device and/or determining the state of polarization of light within the photonic device. Signals from some photodetectors can be used to estimate light power at locations in the photonic device lacking photodetectors.

Method and apparatus for obtaining optical measurements at an optical coupler having two inputs and two outputs

A phase shifting optical device and method of manufacture is provided. In an embodiment, the phase shifting optical device may include a first arm defining a first arm optical path, a second arm defining a second arm optical path, a beam splitter for splitting an input optical beam into first and second sub-beams for propagating in the first and second arm optical paths, respectively, and a beam combiner for combining the first and second sub-beams propagated in the first and second arm optical paths, respectively, into an output optical beam. The first arm including a carrier modification element to induce a phase shift in the first arm optical path relative to the second arm optical path. A cladding may be provided proximate to the first arm, the cladding having a temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT)cl opposite in sign to a temperature coefficient of refractive index (dn/dT)a of the first arm.

Optical phase shifter, optical interferometer based thereupon, and method of manufacture thereof

Monitoring output power levels of a carrier-effect based switching cell allows phase errors resulting from driving a PIN or PN junction of the switching cell to be dynamically compensated for. The compensation may also allow for compensating of phase errors resulting from the phase imbalance of input couplers as well as phase errors from the waveguide due to fabrication variations. By dynamically compensating for phase errors caused by the driving of the PIN or PN junction, the extinction ratio of the carrier-effect based switching cell can be increased.

Dynamic phase shift compensation for free carrier effect photonic switches

An optical coupler at an edge of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) is provided and configured to match a mode of a waveguide of the PIC to a mode of an external optical fiber. A core of the waveguide terminates prior to the edge and can include an inverted taper for mode enlargement. The waveguide cladding includes an inverted taper and is surrounded by an outer cladding material of lower refractive index, forming a second waveguide. The cladding and outer cladding cooperate to guide light between the core and the edge while the inverted taper contributes to mode enlargement. The outer cladding material is selected to have a refractive index which facilitates the mode matching to optical fiber. The coupler can be provided using lithography. Material underneath the waveguide cladding can be removed by an undercutting process and the outer cladding material deposited in place thereof.

Optical edge coupler with controllable mode field for photonic chip

A photonic platform based polarization controller providing a fixed target polarization is disclosed. The polarization controller has a polarization rotator splitter splitting the beam into first and second feeds corresponding to first and second orthogonal polarization components. A first Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) stage provides a first phase delay between the first and second feeds based on a first control signal, and a first mixer mixes the first and second feeds to provide third and fourth feeds. A second MZI stage provides a second phase delay between the third and fourth feeds based on a second control signal, and a second mixer mixes the third and fourth feeds to provide fifth and sixth feeds. A third MZI stage provides a third phase delay between the fifth and sixth feeds based on a third control signal, and a third mixer mixes the fifth and sixth feeds to provide the fixed target polarization. An optical tap splits a portion of the beam.

Automatic endless polarization controller for a silicon-on-insulator platform

A method of fabricating an optical coupling device, comprising forming a waveguide mask layer on a substrate platform, wherein the waveguide mask layer comprises an array of openings comprising a first end and a second end opposite to the first end, immersing the substrate platform into a salt melt comprising ions to form an array of waveguides in the substrate platform through an ion diffusion process, and controlling a rate of immersion such that a diffusion depth of the ions varies as a function of a distance in a direction from the first end to the second end, wherein the array of waveguides extends in the direction from the first end to the second end.

An optical interferometer device is provided including a waveguide interferometer. The waveguide interferometer includes first and second waveguide arms in a waveguide plane, each waveguide arm including a n-type region and a p-type region forming a junction. The n-type region and the p-type region of the second waveguide arm are translationally symmetric with respect to the n-type region and the p-type region, respectively, of the first waveguide arm in the waveguide plane.

Embodiments are provided for a waveguide polarizer comprising a series of bends. The waveguide polarizer is suitable for used in optical waveguide devices or circuits, where a polarized light is required, such as for single polarization output. The polarizer design is independent of the function of the optical devices. In an embodiment, an optical polarizer comprises an optical waveguide configured to propagate light at a designated polarization mode, and comprising a bend in a same plane of the propagated light. The bend has a geometry configured to contain in the optical waveguide the designated polarization mode of the propagated light and radiate outside the optical waveguide a second polarization mode of the propagated light.

Apparatus and method for a waveguide polarizer comprising a series of bends

A bidirectional optical tap-monitor is described for detecting an optical signal power carried by a through waveguide. The tap-monitor comprises a tap waveguide placed near the through waveguide, and a single waveguide-type photodetector for detecting a fraction of the optical signal power coupled from the tap waveguide. The tap waveguide includes two ports at opposite ends of the tap waveguide and the waveguide-type photodetector includes two ports that are connected respectively to the two ports of the tap waveguide. When light travels through the through waveguide in one direction, the coupled fraction of the optical signal power is fed to the photodetector via one of the two ports of the tap waveguide, and when light travels through the through waveguide in the opposite direction, the coupled fraction of the optical signal power is fed to the photodetector via the other one of the two ports of the tap waveguide. The bidirectional optical tap-monitor is operable in either a forward-propagating or a backward-propagating direction.
