A quantum memory system includes a chalcogenide optical fiber link, a magnetic field generation unit and a pump laser. The chalcogenide optical fiber link includes a photon receiving end opposite a photon output end and is positioned within a magnetic field of the magnetic field generation unit when the magnetic field generation unit generates the magnetic field. The pump laser is optically coupled to the photon receiving end of the chalcogenide optical fiber link. The chalcogenide optical fiber link includes a core doped with a rare-earth element dopant. The rare-earth element dopant is configured to absorb a storage photon traversing the chalcogenide optical fiber link upon receipt of a first pump pulse output by the pump laser. Further, the rare-earth element dopant is configured to release the storage photon upon receipt of a second pump pulse output by the pump laser.

A method of forming an optical fiber includes the steps of forming a silica-based soot blank with at least one silica-based soot core cane at least partially embedded in the soot blank. The soot blank with the soot core cane positioned therein is consolidated to form a preform. The preform is then drawn to form an optical fiber. The soot core cane preferably has an average bulk density within 10% of the bulk density of the soot blank, and more preferably within 5% of the bulk density of the soot blank.

Methods for forming optical fiber preforms with low-index trenches are disclosed. According to one embodiment, the method includes depositing silica-based glass soot on a bait rod to form a low-index trench region of the optical fiber preform. The silica-based glass soot is deposited such that the low-index trench region has a first density. Thereafter a barrier layer having a second density greater than the first density is formed around the low-index trench region. Therafter, an overclad region is deposited around the barrier layer. The bait rod is then removed from a central channel of the trench-overclad assembly. A separate core assembly is inserted into the central channel. A down-dopant gas is then directed through the central channel of the trench-overclad assembly as the trench-overclad assembly is heated to dope the low-index trench region. The barrier layer prevents diffusion of the down-dopant from the low-index trench region into the overclad region.

Methods and apparatuses for forming optical preforms from silica glass soot are disclosed. According to one embodiment, a method for forming an optical preform may include loading silica glass soot in a mold cavity of a mold body. The mold body may be rotated at a rotational speed sufficient to force the silica glass soot towards an inner wall of the mold body. Thereafter the silica glass soot is compressed in an inward radial direction as the mold body is rotated to form a soot compact layer.

A method of forming a cladding portion of an optical fiber preform assembly includes positioning a glass core cane in a mold cavity and loading the mold cavity with silica glass soot. The silica glass soot is compressed in an axial direction as the vibratory energy is applied to the mold body to form a soot compact around the glass core cane, wherein the soot compact is the cladding portion of an optical fiber preform assembly and the glass core cane is a core portion of the optical fiber preform assembly.

A few mode optical fiber suitable for use in a mode division multiplexing (MDM) optical transmission system is disclosed. The optical fiber has a graded-index core with a radius Rin the range from 8 &#x3bc;m to 14 &#x3bc;m, an alpha value greater than or equal to about 2.3 and less than about 2.7 at a wavelength of 1550 nm, and a maximum relative refractive index &#x394;from about 0.3% to about 0.6% relative to the cladding. The optical fiber also has an effective area greater than about 90 &#x3bc;mand less than about 160 &#x3bc;m. The core and cladding support only the LPand LPmodes at wavelengths greater than 1500 nm. The cladding has a maximum relative refractive index &#x394;such that &#x394;&#x3e;&#x394;, and the differential group delay between the LPand LPmodes is less than about 0.5 ns/km at a wavelength of 1550 nm.

Photodarkening resistant optical fiber lasing media and fiber lasers incorporating the same are disclosed. In one embodiment, an optical fiber lasing medium includes a core portion formed from silica-based glass comprising a rare-earth dopant and deuterium, the core portion having an index of refraction n, a numerical aperture NA. A concentration of defect color centers in the core portion is less than 1&#xd7;10/cm. Deuterium is combined with the defect color centers to form reacted defect color centers that do not absorb ultraviolet and visible wavelengths of light. A first cladding portion is formed from silica-based glass, the first cladding portion surrounding and directly contacting the core portion and having an index of refraction n, wherein the index of refraction nof the first cladding portion is less than the index of refraction nof the core portion. Methods of forming the photodarkening resistant optical fiber lasing media are also disclosed.
