A portable terminal is provided, which includes a display, and a processor configured to receive a first user input for controlling a brightness of the display, control the display to display an indicator at a first position based on the first user input and control the brightness of the display based on a first brightness step corresponding to the first position, receive a second user input for controlling the brightness of the display, and control the display to display the indicator at a second position which is different from the first position based on the second user input, without displaying the indicator at any intermediate position between the first position and the second position and change the brightness of the display based on a second brightness step corresponding to the second position. A shape and size of the indicator displayed at the first position corresponds to the shape and the size of the indicator displayed at the second position.

Portable terminal capable of controlling display brightness and method for controlling display brightness thereof

A portable terminal is provided including a touch screen display; and a processor configured to control the touch screen display to display a brightness step selection interface for selecting a brightness step, receive, via the touch screen display, a first user input for selecting a first brightness step, control the touch screen display to display an indicator at a first position corresponding to the first brightness step and to control a brightness of the touch screen display based on the first brightness step, receive, via the touch screen display, a second user input for selecting a second brightness step, and control the touch screen display to change a position of the indicator from the first position to a second position corresponding to the second brightness step and to change the brightness of the touch screen display based on the second brightness step.

Disclosed is a method for controlling a backlight of an electronic device, such as a portable terminal, which includes the steps of storing preset backlight brightness values so as to correspond to the backlight brightness values to backlight steps, detecting a backlight brightness value stored so as to correspond to the backlight step required by a user in backlight regulation mode, and regulating the backlight brightness according to the detected backlight brightness value. Further, since the present invention can regulate the backlight brightness at night, the illumination intensity of which is low, the consumption of the battery can be reduced.

Portable terminal capable of controlling backlight and method for controlling backlight thereof

An apparatus and method for controlling battery discharging in a portable terminal having a detachable external battery are provided. The method includes determining if the external battery has been connected with the portable terminal when the portable terminal is booted, receiving power from the external battery when the external battery is connected with the portable terminal and receiving power from an embedded battery of the portable terminal when the external battery has been completely discharged. Furthermore, in charging the batteries, the embedded battery of the portable terminal is first charged when battery charging current is input in a state that the external battery has been connected with the portable terminal, and the external battery is charged when the embedded battery has been completely charged. Power from the external battery is first used when a portable terminal assembled with the external battery is used, and an embedded battery is first charged in charging batteries. Therefore, the embedded battery capacity of the portable terminal can be maintained as much as possible. Furthermore, although the external battery is separated from the portable terminal during battery charging/discharging, the embedded battery capacity can be maintained as much as possible. As a result, even if only the embedded battery is used, a using time of the embedded battery can be increased. Therefore, it is possible to improve the user's convenience.
