A wet ink printer uses a heated printhead. A platen guides and supports the print medium during printing, and has a plurality of raised ribs. In an example, the ribs extend on the base generally along the advance direction of the print media. Each rib comprises a discontinuous series of rib portions, and wherein between each adjacent pair of ribs is provided a spacing to allow deformation of the print medium towards the platen base.

The invention concerns a method for preparing a pharmaceutical composition in the form of microspheres with prolonged release of a water-soluble active principle. The invention is characterized in that it comprises the following successive steps: dissolving an active principle in an appropriate amount of water; emulsifying the resulting aqueous solution of active principle with a d,l-lactide-co-glycolide matrix copolymer, of average molecular weight ranging between 40000 and 80000, dissolved in a chlorinated hydrocarbon, resulting in a first microfine and homogeneous emulsion; emulsifying said resulting first emulsion in an external aqueous phase, containing a surfactant, a viscosity-enhancing agent and an osmotic agent; extraction-evaporation of the solvent to obtain microspheres which are recuperated after filtering, washing and drying. The invention also concerns microspheres obtainable by implementing said method, having continuous release over a period of more than two months, advantageously over a period of at least three months.

A printing device includes a print media advancement subsystem for providing accurate and timely print media advancement in the printing device. The print media advancement subsystem includes a vacuum chamber for generating a vacuum force through a platen for holding a print media stationary. In response to receiving a print media advance signal from a controller in the printing device, a sealing plate forming a side of the vacuum chamber is removed from the vacuum chamber. When the sealing plate is removed, the vacuum chamber is substantially open to the atmosphere, causing the vacuum chamber to pressurize. The pressurization of the vacuum chamber results in removal of the vacuum force from the print media, allowing the print media to advance along the top surface of the platen with minimal friction.

A vacuum holddown device for a hardcopy apparatus, comprising a printing platen with a pattern of through holes and an underlying vacuum chamber, further comprises a member located therebetween and having a substantially similar pattern of through holes, the member being moveable to align the pattern of holes or not so as to respectively interconnect or disconnect the holes in the printing platen and the vacuum chamber. The member may itself define a secondary chamber with which the holes in the printing platen are in communication when not in communication with the vacuum chamber.

A media outputting device for a hardcopy apparatus includes a media source and at least one roller having an outer surface with a contact region for engaging media, where the roller is rotatable for outputting the media. The media outputting device also includes a negative pressure mechanism for creating a negative pressure distribution on the contact region where at least one portion of the contact region that is farther from the media source has a greater negative pressure than at least one portion of the contact region that is closer to the media source.

A storage container for storing inkjet cartridges, when removed from the carriage of a printer, having a capping housing for holding one or more caps, associated with each cartridge, for capping the printhead of the cartridge, wherein the caps are easily removable from the storage container by a user. The provision of manually removable cap allows the cap of a storage container to be matched to a particular cartridge having a specific printhead, ink formulation and lifetime. This ensures the efficacy of the cartridge is maintained during storage and prevents contamination of one cartridge by ink residue that may be left on a cap by another cartridge, which can damage the printhead due to chemical interaction between the different ink formulations.

A replaceable inkjet printhead service module is provided for each separate inkjet printhead. When the printhead for a particular color ink such as cyan has reached the end of its life cycle and requires replacement, the corresponding printhead service module can also be replaced. The printhead service module includes a handle to facilitate manual mounting in a service station carriage which includes identical individual spring-loaded slots with datum guides for securely holding the service module. The service station carriage moves from a user-accessible position for mounting/removing the service module, to various other printhead servicing positions in the path of the printhead carriage.

An ink jet printing system comprises multiple print cartridges each containing a different ink and having a plurality of printhead nozzle arrays scanning across printing media in a printing zone. After a specified amount of ink has been dispensed, an ink jet printhead carriage is moved to a refill station for ink replenishment. A label on a print head service module displays encoded visual indicia which are sensed by an optical sensor on the ink jet printhead carriage. The optical sensor is used to read pre-encoded information as well as on the fly information which is recorded on a label when the carriage moves along a traverse path to the printhead service station.

An inkjet printing system includes a replaceable printhead servicing module which incorporates multiple functions in a single unit. There is a separate servicing module associated with each different printhead, thus avoiding any contamination of either the printhead or the servicing module from interaction or mixing of different color inks. The servicing module includes a capper, a wiper, a spittoon, and a primer connection.
