A generator network of a variational autoencoder can be trained to approximate a simulator and generate a first result. The simulator is associated with input data, based on which the simulator outputs output data. A training data set for the generator network can include the simulator's input data and output data. Based on the simulator's output data and the first result of the generator network, an inference network of the variational autoencoder can be trained to generate a second result. The second result of the trained inference network inverts the first result of the generator and approximates the simulator's input data. The trained inference network can function as an inverted simulator.

Simulator-assisted training for interpretable generative models

A semiconductor structure comprises a substrate, a patch of optically tunable material disposed over the substrate, a first electrode coupled to the patch of optically tunable material and a switch providing a current source, and a second electrode coupled to the patch of optically tunable material and a ground voltage. The first electrode and the second electrode are configured to modify a state of the patch of optically tunable material to adjust a reflectivity of the patch of optically tunable material.

Reconfigurable geometric metasurfaces with optically tunable materials

An apparatus includes two or more electrically rotatable antennas providing a reconfigurable metasurface, each of the electrically rotatable antennas including a disk of optically tunable material. The apparatus also includes a control circuit including a plurality of switches each coupled to (i) one of a plurality of electrodes, the plurality of electrodes being arranged proximate different portions of at least one surface of each of the disks of optically tunable material and (ii) to at least one of a current source and a ground voltage. The control circuit is configured to modify states of portions of the optically tunable material in each of the disks of optically tunable material utilizing current supplied between at least two of the plurality of electrodes to adjust reflectivity of the portions of the optically tunable material to dynamically reconfigure respective antenna shape configurations of each of the electrically rotatable antennas.

An apparatus includes two or more tunable antennas providing a reconfigurable metasurface, each of the tunable antennas including a plurality of pixels of optically tunable material, and a control circuit including switches providing current sources and a ground voltage, the switches being coupled to respective ones of the pixels of optically tunable material in each of the tunable antennas via first electrodes, the ground voltage being coupled to respective ones of the pixels of optically tunable material in each of the tunable antennas via second electrodes. The control circuit is configured to modify states of respective ones of the plurality of pixels of optically tunable material in the tunable antennas utilizing current supplied between the first electrodes and the second electrodes to adjust reflectivity of the plurality of pixels of optically tunable material in each of the tunable antennas to dynamically reconfigure respective antenna shape configurations of the tunable antennas.

Reconfigurable metasurface with tunable antennas formed from arrays of pixels of an optically tunable material

A spatial light modulator (SLM) is provided that includes an optical resonator (i.e., pixel) having nanoscale size. The optical resonator having nanoscale size includes a phase-change material such as, for example, a GeSbTe alloy, sandwiched between silicon nitride cladding layers. The phase-change material can undergo a crystalline-to-amorphous phase transition which is characterized by a large change in optical properties of the resonator.

Approaches for silicon photonics integration are provided. A method includes: forming at least one encapsulating layer over and around a photodetector; thermally crystallizing the photodetector material after the forming the at least one encapsulating layer; and after the thermally crystallizing the photodetector material, forming a conformal sealing layer on the at least one encapsulating layer and over at least one device. The conformal sealing layer is configured to seal a crack in the at least one encapsulating layer. The photodetector and the at least one device are on a same substrate. The at least one device includes a complementary metal oxide semiconductor device or a passive photonics device.

Silicon photonics integration method and structure

An apparatus includes two or more groups of antennas, each including two or more patches of optically tunable material providing two or more antennas. The tunable geometric metasurface also includes a control circuit including a plurality of switches providing current sources and a ground voltage. The plurality of switches are coupled to respective ones of the patches of optically tunable material in each of the groups of antennas via first electrodes. The ground voltage is coupled to respective ones of the patches of optically tunable material in each of the groups of antennas via second electrodes. The control circuit is configured to modify states of the antennas in each of the groups of antennas utilizing the first electrodes and the second electrodes to adjust reflectivity of the patches of optically tunable material to provide a tunable geometric metasurface.

Embodiments of the disclosure provide a demultiplexer for processing a multiplexed optical input. The demultiplexer may include a plurality of Mach-Zehnder Interferometric (MZI) stages for converting the multiplexed optical input into a plurality of component optical signals. Each of the plurality of component optical signals corresponds to a respective wavelength-space component of the multiplexed optical input. A plurality of bandpass filters, each having a respective wavelength passband, may receive one of the plurality of component optical signals. The plurality of bandpass filters generates a plurality of demultiplexed optical signals based on the plurality of component optical signals.

Demultiplexer and related method to process multiplexed optical inputs

An apparatus includes an array of metal nanowires embedded in a matrix of optically tunable material providing a tunable hyperbolic metamaterial, and a control circuit including (i) a current source coupled to first ends of the array of metal nanowires and (ii) a ground voltage coupled to second ends of the array of metal nanowires. The control circuit is configured to modify a state of the optically tunable material utilizing current supplied between the first and second ends of the array of metal nanowires to dynamically reconfigure optical properties of the tunable hyperbolic metamaterial.

Tunable hyperbolic metamaterials

Photonic circuits are disclosed having an efficient optical power distribution network. Laser chips (InP) having different wavelengths are flip-chip assembled near the center of a silicon photonic chip. Each InP die has multiple optical lanes, but a given die has only one wavelength. Waveguides formed in the photonic chip are optically connected to the lanes, and fan out to form multiple waveguide sets, where each waveguide set has one of the waveguides from each of the different wavelengths, i.e., one waveguide from each InP die. The waveguide network is optimized to minimize the number of crossings that any given waveguide may have, and no waveguide having a particular wavelength crosses another waveguide of the same wavelength. The unique arrangements of light sources and waveguides allows the use of a smaller number of more intense laser sources, particularly in applications such as performance-optimized datacenters where liquid cooling systems may be leveraged.

Efficient photonic circuits for liquid-cooled high-density datacenters

Embodiments are directed to a method of forming an optical coupler system. The method includes forming at least one waveguide over a substrate, and forming a sacrificial optical coupler in a first region over the substrate. The method further includes configuring the sacrificial optical coupler to couple optical signals to or from the at least one waveguide, and forming a v-groove in the first region over the substrate, wherein forming the v-groove includes removing the sacrificial optical coupler from the first region.

A dual-use thermal and electro-optic modulator. A thermal adjustment hardware set and an electric-field adjustment hardware set adjust the thermal and electrostatic properties of a common waveguide area. The hardware sets are electrically coupled. The method includes forming at least one waveguide over a substrate, and forming gratings in a first region over the substrate.
