Multilayer adhesive for thermal reversible joining of substrates

In an illustrative embodiment, two panels of different materials may be bonded with a structural adhesive composition comprising microcapsules containing corrosion inhibiting materials for protecting the panels from corrosion. For example, a steel vehicle door outer panel may be bonded to an aluminum alloy or magnesium alloy inner panel using an epoxy adhesive. Dispersed within the uncured adhesive are an abundance of microcapsules filled with a fluid or mobile material for reacting with the iron and/or aluminum or magnesium to inhibit corrosion arising from the facing surfaces of the mixed metal panels. The protective material is released from the microcapsules for diffusion through the cured or uncured interfacial adhesive to react with one or both panel surfaces and form a protective coating on the surfaces.

Corrosion inhibitors in adhesive bonding of vehicle body structures

The bonding of polymeric panels with thermosetting adhesive compositions may lead to an unsightly image of the adhesive bond line on an external surface of the joined articles. This bond-line read-out is reduced or eliminated using an adhesive material with filler particles characterized by nanometer size clay platelets when the content of the filler particles does not exceed about five percent by volume of the uncured adhesive. Selective placement of the adhesive extending to the edges of the bonding surfaces of the polymeric members also reduces bond-line read-out.

A method is provided for attaching a hollow tubular member to a cast member. The cast member has a hollow socket cavity. A body of uncured adhesive is positioned in either the hollow socket of the cast member or the hollow interior of the hollow tubular member. The hollow tubular member is inserted in the hollow cavity. The adhesive is forced to flow into the space between the outside of the tubular member and the socket of the cast member, and the adhesive is then cured.

The coating system comprises a surface layer of a porcelain enamel composition that is generally a borosilicate glass, and preferable contains quartz, borax, boric oxide, potassium nitrate, sodium silicofluoride, and manganese dioxide, and optionally contains titanium dioxide, antimony oxide, cobalt oxide and/or barium oxide. Mechanical and adhesive charged blind fasteners have an annular one way flat or O-ring seal mounted at one end of a cylindrical rivet body sealingly engaged with an axially extending mandrel stem to provide a torodial chamber. The body has radial adhesive-extruding openings therethrough around which a vacuum may be established for initial adhesive charging purposes. For charging, the seal is deflected by the force of a flow of adhesive from a supply responding to the establishment of a positive pressure differential between the supply and the exterior of the body. With the torodial chamber opened, viscous adhesive readily flows therein from the supply. After being filled, the vacuum is terminated and the seal naturally recovers and closes the body to confine the adhesive therein. Adhesive charging can be achieved by other mechanisms that impress a load on the supply to effect seal opening.

A method for attaching a cosmetic body panel to a composite cargo box without inclusion of a conventional integral lip. The cargo box sidewalls are formed without integral lips. A metallic lip member is bonded to the peripheral top rail at the top of the sidewalls, wherein the lip member is configured so as to mimic the surface contour (geometry) of a conventional integral lip, including the slot, notches and wedge shape thereof for like attaching of a cosmetic body panel thereto.
