A computer system enhances guidance information on a display, allowing a user position and orientation in 3D space to be achieved. In some embodiments, the guidance is visual, for example the blurring of display objects not at the desired position. In some embodiments, the guidance is aural, for example placing a sound moving to the desired position. In some embodiments, the guidance is tactile, for example using haptic pads attached to a head-mounted display to push the user in a specified direction. The system may be used to guide the user spatially for the performing of a task, to help the user avoid sensitive components, or to guide the user to position a sensor, such as a camera, in an optimal direction for taking measurements. The system includes head positioning, hand positioning and gaze positioning techniques.

Directional instructions in an hybrid-reality system

A computer system detects an object in a field-of-view (FOV) using at least one sensor coupled to the computer system and determines a shape of the object using a processor of the computer system. An overlay element having the shape and a changeable characteristic is created and a value of a parameter is obtained. A representation of the overlay element is rendered with the changeable characteristic set based on a value of the parameter and presented on a display of the computer system to at least partially occlude the object.

A first position of a hybrid reality system (DHR) relative to a first real-world object is determined and data associated with an occluded object is received. A viewport is established anchored to a first location on the first real-world object and a first image showing a first virtual view of the hidden portion of the occluded object as it would be seen from the first position of the DHR through the viewport is presented on the DHR overlaid on a first view of the first real-world object. At a second time, a second position of the DHR is determined and a second image showing a second virtual view of the hidden portion of the occluded object as it would be seen from the second position of the DHR through the viewport is presenting on the DHR overlaid on a second view of the first real-world object.

Integrating a user of a head-mounted display into a process

A person who is not using a hybrid reality (HR) system communicates with the HR system without using a network communications link using a body pose. Data is received from a sensor and an individual is detected in the sensor data. A first situation of at least one body part of the individual in 3D space is ascertained at a first time and a body pose is determined based on the first situation of the at least one body part. An action is decided on based on the body pose and the action is performed on an HR system worn by a user.

A method of signaling includes receiving a first type of energy at a beacon device, converting the first type of energy into a second type of energy, and transmitting the second type of energy to indicate a position of the beacon device in a real-world environment to a hybrid reality (HR) system. A beacon device includes a receiver to receive a first type of energy, a conversion apparatus to convert the first type of energy into a second type of energy, and a transmitter to transmit the second type of energy to a hybrid reality (HR) system.

Information obscured to a user is provided through a display of a hybrid-reality system (DHR). A view position relative to a real-world object is established and data associated with an occluded object is received. The occluded object is at least partially occluded by the real-world object at the view position. An image of at least a portion of the occluded object is then rendered on the DHR.

Display of hidden information

A system includes a head-mounted display (HMD) and one or more beacon devices. A beacon device includes a receiver to receive a first type of energy, a conversion apparatus to convert the first type of energy into a second type of energy, and a transmitter to transmit the second type of energy to the HMD. The HMD includes a display, a structure adapted to position the display in a field-of-view of the user, a sensor to receive the second type of energy from the beacon device, and a processor. The processor is programmed to receive the second type of energy from the beacon device located in a real-world environment, determine a position of the beacon device based on the second type of energy received from the beacon device, and provide a stimulus to a user on the HMD based on the position of the beacon device.

A method to provide positional information to a user of a hybrid reality (HR) system includes receiving a signal at the HR system from a beacon device located in a real-world environment, determining a position of the beacon device based on the signal, and providing a stimulus to the user on the HR system based on the position of the beacon device. A head-mounted display (HMD) includes a display, a structure, coupled to the display and adapted to position the display in a field-of-view (FOV) of the user, and a processor, coupled to the display, the processor configured to perform the method.

Providing positional information using beacon devices

A computer system renders one or more virtual objects on a display of a hybrid-reality system (DHR), such as head-mounted display (HMD), which represents occluded or obscured details in the field-of-view. Information is presented to a user by establishing a view position relative to a real-world object and receiving dimension and position data associated with an occluded object. The occluded object is at least partially occluded by the real-world object at the view position. A first image of at least a portion of the occluded object is rendered on the DHR using the first data. Second data associated with the occluded object is received and a stimulus is provided to the user representing the second data.

Presentation of information associated with hidden objects

A computer system presents a virtual object on a display of the computer system which represents an action at a location in space. If a user of the computer system approaches the location, the computer system presents one or more stimuli to encourage movement away from that location. The appearance of the object may vary as the user of the computer system moves. The appearance of the object may include information and may vary with a change of state. Multiple such virtual objects may be used to indicate a path.

Virtual barrier objects

A computer system provides directional guidance to a user wearing a head-mounted display (HMD). This is accomplished by obtaining a path through real-world space and presenting multiple virtual path indicators to the user on the head-mounted display. The virtual path indicators are overlaid on a view of a portion of the real-world space and direct the user to follow the path through real-world space.

An occluded object displayed on a head-mounted display (HMD) is manipulated by establishing a first view position relative to a real-world object, and receiving three-dimensional data associated with occluded objects, the occluded objects at least partially occluded by the real-world object at the first view position. A first image of at least a portion of the occluded objects is rendered on the HMD from the first view position at a geometrically correct location with respect to an image of the real-world object on the HMD using the three-dimensional data. At least one occluded object is selected from the rendered portion of the occluded objects, a second view position is established relative to the selected at least one occluded object, and a second image of the selected at least one occluded object is rendered on the HMD from the second view position using the three-dimensional data.

Virtual manipulation of hidden objects

A computer system detects an object in a field-of-view (FOV) using at least one sensor coupled to the computer system and determines a shape of the object using a processor of the computer system. An overlay element having the shape and a changeable characteristic is created and a series of values of a parameter over a period of time is obtained. Multiple representations of the overlay element are rendered with the changeable characteristic changed based on the series of values of the parameter and serially presented on a display of the computer system to at least partially occlude the object.
