A network where FC and Ethernet storage traffic share the underlying network. The network extends FC SAN storage specific attributes to Ethernet storage devices. The network is preferably formed of FC switches, so each edge switch acts as an FCoE FCF, with internal communications done using FC. IP packets are encapsulated in FC packets for transport. Preferably, either each outward facing switch port can be configured as an Ethernet or FC port, so devices can be connected as desired. FCoE devices connected to the network are in particular virtual LANs (VLANs). The name server database is extended to include VLAN information for the device and the zoning database has automatic FCOE_VLAN zones added to provide a mechanism for enhanced soft and hard zoning. Zoning is performed with the conventional zoning restrictions enhanced by including the factor that any FCoE devices must be in the same VLAN.

An ARP response is processed similarly to update the local database and to distribute the update.

One embodiment of the present invention provides a switch that facilitates name services in a virtual cluster switch. The switch includes a name service database indicating at least one media access control (MAC) address learned at a second switch. The switch also includes a control mechanism. During operation, the control mechanism distributes information on a locally learned MAC address to the second switch. In addition, the control mechanism receives information on a MAC address learned at the second switch.

Use of a Location ID in addition to normal information to allow development of non-shortest path routes. The edge switches which terminate the distance links between locations are identified. Shortest path routes are determined for all switches in the same location. For each edge switch, routes over the distance links to other locations are determined, marking the interface connected to the distance links. The two determined sets of routes are combined. For devices directly connected to the edge switch, only the marked interface is used to reach the other location. For switches directly connected to the edge switch, use only routes from non-marked interfaces to marked interfaces and remove any routes from marked to marked or non-marked to non-marked interfaces. This operation for the directly connected switches allows single hops that are non-shortest path to an edge switch and removes certain potential loopback situations due to shortest path routes.

The entire FCoE fabric is a single virtual domain, even though there may be multiple FCFs and FDFs. The virtual domain is a different Domain_ID than any of the FCFs. In certain embodiments there are multiple FCFs, of which one is selected as the master or designated FCF. The master FCF performs normal fabric configuration in conjunction with the Fiber Channel fabric. The master FCF assigns the virtual domain FC node IDs and controls development of subdomain IDs. Virtual links are instantiated between the master FCF and other FCFs, between top level FDFs and the FCFs and between the FDFs at each of various levels. FDFs connected to ENodes proxy the master FCF for most FIP operations. FIP FLOGI and FDISC operations are handled by the master FDF, but the FDFs convert the FIP FLOGI requests to VD_FLOGI requests, which include information about the FDF handling the transaction.

Single virtual domain fibre channel over ethernet fabric

Implementations are disclosed that provide protocols for connecting an intelligent service module within a storage area network (SAN). The protocols support physical connections between the intelligent service module and a director-level switch of the SAN. In some variations, the intelligent service module may comprise a director service module (DSM), a domain-sharing leaf switch service module (LSSM), or a non-domain-sharing LSSM. The protocols provide for establishing link parameters and negotiating responsibilities between the intelligent service module and the director-level switch. In one configuration, for example, ELP and ELP_ACCEPT frames may be used to establish the link parameters. In another configuration, ESC and ESC_ACCEPT frames may be used to negotiate responsibilities between the intelligent service module and the director-level switch. Other configurations also provide an ownership status of the intelligent service module that is used to determine whether the switch can initiate management of the intelligent service module.
