A drilling system, comprising a drill string; and a ranging tool mounted on the drill string, the ranging tool comprising a magnetic sensor pair comprising a first magnetic sensor and a second magnetic sensor mounted radially opposite one another on the ranging tool, wherein each of the magnetic sensors is structured and configured to detect at least a radial component and a tangential component of a magnetic field; a rotatable assembly, comprising a motor structured and arranged to actuate rotation of the magnetic sensor pair around the drill string; and an electronics package connected to at least one of the magnetic sensor pair, and the motor, wherein the electronics package comprises a controller and a wireless telemetry device.

A compact sub assembly and a method for forming a deep antenna. The assembly may comprise a look-ahead deep transmitter is attached at about one end of the compact sub assembly, and a shallow transmitter is attached to the compact sub assembly and positioned adjacent to the look-ahead deep transmitter. A method of forming a deep antenna may comprise positioning a look-ahead deep transmitter adjacent to a shallow transmitter at about one end of a compact sub assembly, and connecting the look-ahead deep transmitter to a switching module through one or more deep switches, connecting the shallow transmitter to the switching module through one or more shallow switches, and closing the one or more deep switches and the one or more shallow switches to activate the look-ahead deep transmitter and the shallow transmitter to form the deep antenna.

Compact logging while drilling look around and look ahead tool

A single layer antenna path profile is provided. An antenna assembly for the single layer antenna profile includes a bobbin having a cylindrical body defining an outer radial surface, an inner radial surface, and a central axis. The antenna assembly also includes one or more channels defined in the outer radial surface. In some aspects, each channel is defined by a continuously curved inner surface having a constant radius. In some aspects, the inner surface extends more than 180 but less than 360 and thereby defines an opening in the body. The antenna assembly also includes a coil including a wire wrapped about the bobbin and received within the one or more channels. In some aspects, an arcuate portion of the wire extends through the opening such that a portion of the wire protrudes out of the channel.

Wellbore logging tools can include a coil antenna assembly that prevents breakage of a coil wire during downhole use under elevated pressure. The antenna assembly can include an insulator base used to help insulate the wires so elevated downhole pressures do not result in a short to a tool mandrel. The insulator base provides a recessed path for the in/out portions of the wire so manufacturing fixtures of the antenna assembly will not damage them.

A reduced-cost apparatus for calibrating the sensitivity and orthogonality of a triaxial magnetometer, and a method for adjusting the distance between the two coils of a Helmholtz coil and other related parameters are described herein. A method can include positioning a calibrated magnetometer within a mounting fixture between two coils of a Helmholtz coil, the two coils arranged in mutually parallel planes and separated by the radius of the Helmholtz coil, the mounting fixture mounted such that a position of the mounting fixture is adjustable along an axis orthogonal to the mutually parallel planes; adjusting the position of the mounting fixture over at least some of the positions and measuring the magnetic field at each position to generate a set of magnetic field measurements associated with the positions; and adjusting the first distance based on the first set of magnetic field measurements. Calibration of sensitivity and axial orthogonality for magnetometers

An apparatus and method may operate to mount an electrode assembly with the exterior of a casing string to be placed in a borehole in a subterranean formation. The electrode assembly may include electrodes in spaced relation to one another. After the casing string and associated electrode assembly are in the borehole, the method may include providing a series of excitation signals at a plurality of frequencies to at least one electrode to inject a series of injection signals into fluid in the annulus. The method can further include receiving signals in response to the series of injection signals through at least one other electrode. The received signals can be representative of an impedance spectrum including impedance values representative of the fluid in the borehole annulus. The method can further include identifying the fluid in reference to the impedance spectrum. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

Wellbore fluid discrimination using impedance spectra characteristics

An apparatus and method may operate to position an electrode assembly within a fluid. The electrode assembly may include an injection electrode and a receiving electrode in spaced relation to one another. The method may include providing a series of excitation signals at a plurality of frequencies to the injection electrode to inject a series of injection signals into the fluid. The method can further include receiving signals in response to the series of injection signals through the receiving electrode. The received signals can be representative of an impedance spectrum including impedance values representative of the fluid. The method can further include generating a phase angle fingerprint based on the impedance spectrum to characterize the fluid according to the phase angle fingerprint. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods are disclosed.

An antenna assembly includes a bobbin that provides a cylindrical body that defines an outer radial surface, an inner radial surface, and a central axis. One or more channels are defined on the outer radial surface, and each channel provides a first sidewall, a second sidewall opposite the first sidewall, a floor, and a pocket jointly defined by the first sidewall and the floor. A coil including one or more wires is wrapped about the bobbin and received within the one or more channels.

Tilted antenna bobbins and methods of manufacture

A disclosed example embodiment includes an antenna assembly for use in a well logging system. The antenna assembly includes a flexible, non-conductive cylindrical core having an outer surface and an electrically conductive path positioned on the outer surface of the core. The electrically conductive path forms an electromagnetic coil operable to transmit or receive electromagnetic energy. The electrically conductive path is formed on the core without winding a wire around the core using, for example, a removal process selected from the group consisting of milling, machining, etching and laser removal, an additive process selected from the group consisting of printing with conductive and dielectric inks and silk screening with conductive and dielectric epoxies or an integrated material deposition process such as a multi-material 3D printing process. The antenna assembly may be flexible mounted on a tubular member during assembly of a well logging tool.

The logging tool further includes a ferrite element coupled to the tool body proximate at least a portion of the antenna and in a non-parallel orientation with respect to a normal of a plane defined by the antenna.

An apparatus includes a pair of connectors and two or more conductive paths formed in each connector in the pair of connectors. The pair of connectors includes a first connector and a second connector. The first connector is substantially more flexible than the second connector, and each connector in the pair of connectors includes a bulkhead. Each of the two or more conductive paths in each connector in the pair of connectors is electrically isolated from all other conductive elements in the respective connector. A shroud may be located between the bulkheads and disposed about the pair of connectors when the pair of connectors are coupled together electrically.

In an embodiment, the apparatus includes an instrument hub that is inline with drill pipe of a drill string. The instrument hub includes a sensor to receive downhole communications from downhole. The instrument hub also includes a transmitter to wireless transmit data representative of the downhole communications to a data processor unit.
