There is presented a systemfor sorting microscopic objects, where the system comprises a fluid channelwith an inletand an outlet, where the fluid channel is arranged for allowing the fluid flow to be laminar. The system furthermore comprises a detection systemwhich enables detecting microscopic objects in the fluid channel and furthermore enables determining their position. The system furthermore comprises a controller, such as a computer, which receives the positions and accordingly controls a source of light beams so as to 'shoot' light beams towards selected microscopic objects so as to 'push' them into a new position. The system thereby enables sorting the selected microscopic objects. In more specific embodiments, the detection system furthermore assigns different categories to different microscopic objects, so as to enable sorting based on multiple categories.

System for sorting microscopic objects using electromagnetic radiation

According to the present invention there is provided an input device () comprising a plurality of keys, at least one detection structure (), and at least one display (), wherein: each of the plurality of keys have a depressible key cap () with an at least semi-transparent top surface, the at least one detection structure is configured for detecting individual depression of each of the plurality of key caps, and the at least one display () is configured for providing image information of individual labels () for each key of the plurality of keys. The present invention relates to a systemfor independently holding and manipulating one or more microscopic objectsand for targeting at least a part of the one or more microscopic objects within a trapping volumewith electromagnetic radiation. The system comprises trapping means for holding and manipulating the one or more microscopic objects and electromagnetic radiation targeting means (). The light means comprising a light source and a spatial light modulator which serve to modify the light from the light source so as to enable specific illumination of at least a part of the one or more microscopic objects. The trapping means and the electromagnetic radiation targeting means () are enabled to function independently of each other, so that the trapped objects may be moved around without taking being dependent on which parts are being targeted and vice versa.

A method and system for synthesizing controllable light beams includes a spatially modulated light source that generates electromagnetic radiation with a set of replicas of a predetermined symbol, s, positioned at desired positions (x, y) in an object plane o(x, y) intersecting, preferably perpendicular to, the direction of propagation of the electromagnetic radiation, and having spatial amplitudes a(x-x, y-y), spatial phases &#x3c6;(x-x, y-y), and spatial polarisation vectors p(x-x, y-y), a Fourier transforming lens for Fourier transforming the electromagnetic radiation, a first spatial light modulator for phase shifting the transformed electromagnetic radiation with the phase &#x2212;&#x3a6;(u, v) of S*, S* the complex conjugate of the transformed symbol, a Fourier transforming lens for Inverse Fourier transforming the spatially modulated radiation, a set of light beams are formed propagating through the inverse Fourier plane (x', y&#x2032;) at desired positions (x&#x2032;, y&#x2032;), and a controller for controlling the position of a replica of the symbol, for movement of the light beam.

Light beam generation

The present invention relates to a method and a system for synthesizing a prescribed three-dimensional electromagnetic field based on generalized phase contrast imaging. Such a method and apparatus may be utilized in advanced optical micro and nano-manipulation, such as by provision of a multiple-beam optical tweezer.

Generation of a desired three-dimensional electromagnetic field

The present invention relates to an optical manipulation system () for generation of a plurality of optical traps for manipulation of micro-objects including nano-objects using electromagnetic radiation forces in a micro-object manipulation volume (), the system comprising a spatially modulated light source () for emission of a first light beam () with a spatially an adjustable spatial light modulator () for generating a second () and a third () modulated light beam, the second intensity modulated light beam propagating towards a first deflector () for deflection of the second light beam towards the micro-object manipulation volume (), and the third intensity modulated light beam propagating towards a second deflector () for deflection of the third light beam towards the same volume (). In one embodiment the optical manipulation system provides sets of beams propagating along substantially the same axis of propagation but in opposite directions, so-called counter-propagating beams, thereby forming a significant trapping force along the propagation axis of the beams for trapping of a micro-object.

Optical manipulation system using a plurality of optical traps

The present invention relates to a method and a system for synthesizing an intensity pattern based on generalized phase contrast imaging. The phase filter contains a plurality of phase shifting regions that is matched to the layout of a light source array, each of the regions being positioned at the zero-order diffraction region of a respective element of the array. Further, the shape of each phase shifting region may match the shape of the zero-order diffraction region of the respective element. Thus, the energy of the electromagnetic fields of the system may be distributed over a large area compared to the area of a zero-order diffraction region of a single plane electromagnetic field of a known phase contrast imaging system.

Generation of a desired wavefront with a plurality of phase contrast filters

A system is provided for conversion of a first electromagnetic field into a desired second electromagnetic field, for example for coupling modes between waveguides or into microstructured waveguides. The system includes a complex spatial electromagnetic field converter that is positioned for reception of at least a part of the first electromagnetic field and that is adapted for conversion of the received field into the desired electromagnetic field, and wherein at least one of the first and second fields matches a mode of a microstructured waveguide. An advantage of the system is that the full effect of an incident light beam may be utilized for exciting a desired complicated mode of a specific waveguide. Another advantage is that the power of the incident beam may be coupled into one specific mode and not others, whereby a high mode suppression ratio may be achieved.
