A light emitting diode with reduced stray light includes a base with an active light emitting element mounted in the base. An epoxy envelope is mounted on the base. The envelope includes a conical side portion and a spherical dome portion. The envelope is encapsulated with optically absorbing material of low reflectivity. The optically absorbing material is in direct contact with the side portion of the envelope and part of the spherical dome portion leaving an exposed portion through which rays of light pass. The diameter d of the exposed portion is equal to: 2r[sin (x+arcsin (r/s/n))], wherein r is the radius of a spherical dome portion, x&lt;arcsin (1/n) is the maximum angle between a surface normal and a ray emitted from the active light emitting element that strikes the envelope at the edge of the exposed portion of the spherical dome portion, s is the distance between the active light emitting element and the center of the spherical dome portion, and n is the index of refraction of the material of the epoxy envelope.

Encapsulated light emitting diode and method for encapsulation

A quantitative measuring instrument includes a casing with a cavity for a reagent strip handling mechanism. The mechanism includes a slide with a resiliently biased toggle member for providing snap action of the slide between an open, reagent strip loading position and a closed, quantitative measuring position. A light seal is mounted on the toggle member that engages each reagent strip in the closed position of the slide. In a first, alternative embodiment of the instrument, the slide mechanism includes a cam arm that engages cam surfaces on the instrument raising the cam arm to an open, reagent strip loading position from a closed, reagent strip holding position. In this embodiment the slide can be removed from the instrument and cleaned. In a second alternative embodiment the slide includes a first detent corresponding to a closed position of the slide and a second detent corresponding to an open position. A pair of spring fingers are mounted in the cavity of the instrument casing. One of the spring fingers engages the first detent in the closed position and the second spring finger engages the second detent in the open position providing resistance that defines the two positions. The slide in this embodiment can also be removed and cleaned.

The separation device comprises upper and lower portions which are joined together to form an inner cavity retaining liquid and a capillary gap which extends outwardly radially from said cavity. During rotation solid particles present in the suspending liquid pass outwardly along and/or become entrapped in the capillary gap(s).

A method for controlling a liquid volume flowing onto a reactive surface which includes a sample application port, two systems of capillary channels, a reaction chamber, and an overflow chamber. The liquid sample to be analyzed is applied to the sample application port which gives the liquid entry to a capillary channel leading to the reaction chamber which contains a material capable of detecting the component of interest in the liquid. When the reaction chamber is filled, the remaining liquid will flow through another capillary channel to an overflow chamber. The capillary channel leading to the overflow chamber is controlled so that liquid cannot flow back into the reaction chamber.

A multiple profile reagent card for simultaneously or sequentially performing multiple analyses of analyte is formed by applying ribbons of reagent impregnated matrix material parallel to each other on a substrate and then removing portions of at least the matrix material to create separate matrices along each ribbon of matrix material.
