This invention provides a process for hydrotreating hydrocarbon resins, which process comprises contacting a feedstock comprising a hydrocarbon resin or rosin, under suitable hydrotreating conditions, with a bulk multimetallic catalyst comprised of at least one Group VIII non-noble metal and at least two Group VIB metals and wherein the ratio of Group VIB metal to Group VIII non-noble metal is from about 10:1 to about 1:10. The process according to the invention can achieve increased hydrocarbon resin productivity through increase in throughput volumes and effective catalyst lifetimes. The process of the invention is desirably practiced with a bulk catalyst consisting of only the combination of the metal species with the active metal components. The absence of carrier substrates largely removes the possibility of halogen accumulation on substrate surfaces that, in turn, can acidify metal catalysts such that additional, progressive cracking of the hydrocarbon resin molecules occurs.

This invention relates to an improved resin hydrotreating process which maintains resin softening point and aromaticity as well as catalyst lifetime. The process is particularly useful for hydrotreating resins containing one or more halogen residues. Pressures are maintained at 2000 psi or less. Color is substantially reduced while softening point is not decreased by more than 8&deg; C.

The invention relates to catalytic hydrogenation processes for hydrocarbon molecules of number-average molecular weight greater than about 180, and to use therein of an inert catalyst support comprising porous refractory substrate particles having: a) a pore volume distribution wherein i) pores having diameters &gt;150,000 .ANG. constitute greater than about 2% of the total volume, ii) pores having diameters &gt;20,000 .ANG. and &lt;150,000 .ANG. constitute greater than about 1% of the total volume, iii) pores having diameters &gt;2,000 .ANG. and &lt;20,000 .ANG. constitute greater than about 12% of the total volume; and, b) a total pore volume of from about 45% to 86% of the total volume of the substrate particles. Using the invention increased resin productivity of 150% or more can be achieved in industrial operations. Hydrocarbon resins prepared from catalytically or thermally polymerized feedstreams and hydrogenated using the inert support having the described pore size distribution exhibit color and softening point characteristics at least equivalent to previously available resins. Also, increased aromaticity of aliphatic-aromatic resins prepared according to the process is possible leading to particular suitability as tackifers for styrene block copolymers, ethylene-vinyl ester copolymer and acrylic copolymer adhesive compositions.
