Stable emulsions of ethylene homopolymers and copolymers having controlled molecular weight and relatively small particle size are formed by polymerizing ethylene and/or ethylene with another alpha unsaturated monomer in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water soluble persulfate initiator, an anionic emulsifier, nonionic emulsifier or most desirable a mixture of anionic and nonionic emulsifiers and a minor but effective amount of an alkyl mercaptan having from about 4 to about 20 carbon atoms. The resulting stable emulsions exhibit improved compatibility, stability and performance when formulated in various coating compositions such as latex paints and floor polishes.

Emulsions of ethylene polymers and copolymers with controlled molecular

Stable emulsions of terpolymer particles are formed by polymerizing ethylene, a vinyl ester monomer such as vinyl acetate, and an alkyl vinyl monomer having from about 3 up to about 24 carbon atoms in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water soluble persulfate initiator, and a nonionic and/or anionic emulsifier. The resulting novel stable emulsions contain particles of ethylene-vinyl ester-alkyl vinyl terpolymer which will provide film coatings of increased flexibility and toughness. Furthermore, the emulsions have excellent compatibility when blended within conventional polish formulations.

Ethylene-vinyl ester-alkyl vinyl terpolymer emulsions

Emulsions of ethylene homopolymer and/or copolymers are provided which are remarkably clear and have a light transmission of at least about 95%, and contain particles which have an average size no greater than about 100 angstrom units. These emulsions are produced by polymerizing ethylene, or ethylene with at least one other alpha unsaturated monomer in aqueous medium in the presence of an effective amount of a water soluble persulfate initiator, from about 2 to about 5 percent by weight based on the aqueous medium of an alkyl aryl sulfonate surfactant, and from about 0.3 to about 0.7 percent by weight based on the aqueous medium of an alkyl mercaptan. The resulting clear emulsions are combined with clear polish latexes such as acrylic latexes to form clear polish compositions.

Stable emulsions of terpolymer particles are formed by polymerizing ethylene, an acrylic monomer such as acrylic acid, and an alkyl vinyl monomer having from about 3 up to about 24 carbon atoms in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water soluble persulfate initiator, and a nonionic and/or anionic emulsifier. The resulting novel stable emulsions contain particles of ethylene-acrylic-alkyl vinyl terpolymer which will provide film coatings of increased flexibility and toughness. Furthermore, the emulsions have excellent compatibility when blended within conventional polish formulations.

Ethylene-acrylic-alkyl vinyl terpolymer emulsions

Stable emulsions of terpolymer particles are formed by polymerizing ethylene, a difunctional olefin such as maleic anhydride and an alkyl vinyl monomer having from about 3 to about 18 carbon atoms in an aqueous medium in the presence of a water soluble persulfate initiator, and a nonionic and/or anionic emulsifier. The resulting novel stable emulsions contain particles of terpolymer of the three monomers which will provide film coatings of increased flexibility and toughness. Furthermore, the emulsions have excellent compatibility when blended with conventional polish formulations.

Ethylene-difunctional olefin-alkyl vinyl terpolymer emulsions

Stable polyethylene emulsions are produced having a solids content of at least about 30% by weight in a polymerization process without the necessity of a concentration step by contacting ethylene with an aqueous reaction medium containing from about 0.5 to about 1.5 weight percent of a water soluble persulfate initiator and from about 5.5 to about 10.0 weight percent of an alkyl benzene sulfonate emulsifier and allowing the reaction to proceed until at least about 30 weight percent solids level is obtained. The resulting polymeric emulsions are stable and surprisingly have superior properties to polyethylene emulsions which are conventionally produced at lower solids levels and then concentrated to the higher solids level.
