A turbine airfoil having an improved impact and erosion resistance. The airfoil comprises: (a) a base segment having an impact resistant leading edge section proximate to the leading edge comprising a material having having a yield strength of least about 250 ksi and an elongation percentage of about 12% or less; and (b) an erosion resistant coating overlaying the base segment at least in the leading and trailing edge portions of the pressure side, the erosion resistant coating comprising at least one ceramic layer having at least one of the following properties: (1) an erosion value of at least about 200 g. of erodent to cause a thickness loss of about 15-20 microns; (2) an erosion volume loss value (V) of about 1.9 or less as defined by the equation V=H&#xd7;E&#xd7;Fwhere H is hardness, E is elastic modulus and F is fracture toughness; and (3) an F value of at least about 1.5 MPa*m. The erosion resistant coating can comprise alternating ceramic and metallic layers and is typically formed by a method involving the step of forming on the pressure side of the base segment of the airfoil in alternating fashion at least one ceramic layer and at least one metallic layer.

Airfoil having improved impact and erosion resistance and method for preparing same

A rod end bearing comprising a body comprising a ring portion and a rod portion. The ring portion comprises a ring having an opening, the opening having a center axis. The rod portion comprises a first rod extending radially from the ring in a direction perpendicular to the center axis. The opening having a geometry sufficient to support a substantially spherical ball bearing, and permit rotation of the ball bearing inside the ring. The inner periphery of the ring is in contact with the ball bearing and includes a wear coating. An antifriction coating is disposed on a surface selected from the group consisting of a surface of the wear coating, a surface of the ball bearing and combinations thereof. The antifriction coating maintains a coefficient of friction between the wear coating and the ball bearing of up to about 0.95 in atmospheres substantially devoid of water vapor.

High temperature rod end bearings

A variable gas turbine compressor vane assembly comprising a case structure comprising a cavity. A compressor vane is at least partially disposed inside the cavity in the case structure. The portion of the compressor vane is rotatably supported inside the cavity. A wear coating is disposed on at least a portion of a surface of the compressor vane. An antifriction coating is disposed on the wear coating. A bushing is disposed between the antifriction coating and the case structure. The bushing is in sliding contact with each of the antifriction coating and the case structure. The antifriction coating maintains a coefficient of friction between the antifriction coating and the bushing of equal to or less than about 0.95 in atmospheres substantially devoid of water vapor.

Wear resistant variable stator vane assemblies

A turbine airfoil having an improved impact and erosion resistance. A turbine blade has an airfoil section with a root end and a tip end, and an attachment at the root end of the airfoil section. A blade tip seal is joined to the tip end of the airfoil section. The blade tip seal is formed as an open-cell solid aluminum oxide foam made of aluminum oxide cell walls having intracellular volume therebetween. The blade tip seal has a blade interface region adjacent to the tip end of the airfoil section. The blade interface region is formed of the aluminum oxide foam and a nickel-base alloy within the intracellular volume. The blade tip seal also has a contact region remote from the blade interface region and comprising the aluminum foam wherein the intracellular volume is porosity.

Turbine blade with ceramic foam blade tip seal, and its preparation

A gas turbine stationary shroud is a curved stationary shroud body having a concave inner gas-path surface and a generally convex back. The curved stationary shroud body is made of an open-cell solid ceramic foam having ceramic cell walls with intracellular volume therebetween. The ceramic foam may be tailored to provide requirement properties. The ceramic adjacent to the gas path surface may be modified to increase or decrease its abrasion resistance, depending upon the design requirements of the stationary shroud. The intracellular volume adjacent to the gas-path surface may be porosity. Some of the ceramic material adjacent to the back of the shroud may be removed, and the intracellular volume adjacent to the back of the shroud may be filled with a nickel-base alloy.

Gas turbine stationary shroud made of a ceramic foam material, and its preparation

An abrasive coating suitable for forming an abrasive blade tip of a gas turbine engine. The coating is characterized as being capable of abrading a ceramic shroud at elevated temperatures during the in-service operation of the engine, and being resistant to oxidation and hot corrosion within the engine environment. The abrasive coating includes an MCrAl alloy layer, a ceramic layer overlying the alloy layer so as to form an outer surface of the abrasive coating, and abrasive particles dispersed between the alloy layer and the ceramic layer so that at least some of the abrasive particles are partially embedded in the alloy layer and also partially embedded in the ceramic layer. In addition, at least some of the abrasive particles project above the outer surface of the abrasive coating formed by the ceramic layer.

Abrasive ceramic matrix turbine blade tip and method for forming

A metal alloy article is provided with an improved fretting wear resistant coating combination for use in the temperature range of about 650.degree.-1100.degree. F. on an article contact surface shaped to cooperate with an abutting member. An example is a gas turbine engine blade base carried by an abutting support slot. The coating combination includes an inner portion of a Ni base alloy having a room temperature annealed yield strength of greater than about 30 ksi to less than about 57 ksi and densely deposited from a powder, for example by the high velocity oxygen--fuel thermal spray process rather than by other processes such as air plasma spray. Cured on the inner portion is an outer portion of graphite particles mixed in an inorganic binder capable of stable use in the range of about 650.degree.-1100.degree. F., for example silicates or phosphates, such as of aluminum.

High temperature anti-fretting wear coating combination

A method for forming a blade tip on a turbine blade of a gas turbine engine includes providing a powder alloy from a family of environmentally-resistant powder alloys and forming the blade tip by melting and fusing the powder alloy to the turbine blade. The blade tip alloys preferably have a chemical composition of, in weight percent, about 14 to about 18 percent chromium, about 6.45 to about 6.95 percent aluminum, about 9.75 to about 11.45 percent cobalt, about 5.95 to about 6.55 percent tantalum, about 1.85 to about 2.35 percent rhenium, about 0.05 to about 1.75 percent hafnium, about 0,006 to about 0.03 percent zirconium, about 0.02 to about 0.11 percent carbon, up to about 1.1 percent silicon, up to about percent 0.01 percent boron, with the balance being nickel and typical impurities.

Method for forming an environmentally resistant blade tip

A family of environmentally-resistant alloys is provided which are suitable for forming a blade tip for a turbine blade of a gas turbine engine. The blade tip alloys preferably have a chemical composition of, in weight percent, about 14 to about 18 percent chromium, about 6.45 to about 6.95 percent aluminum, about 9.75 to about 11.45 percent cobalt, about 5.95 to about 6.55 percent tantalum, about 1.85 to about 2.35 percent rhenium, about 0.05 to about 1.75 percent hafnium, about 0.006 to about 0.03 percent zirconium, about 0.02 to about 0.11 percent carbon, up to about 1.1 percent silicon, up to about percent 0.01 percent boron, with the balance being nickel and typical impurities.

Environmentally-resistant turbine blade tip

A rotary seal member, such as a gas turbine engine blade, is provided with an improved surface layer which has an elastic modulus matched with the elastic modulus of a substrate of the member. Also, the surface layer does not form a brittle intermetallic with the substrate at an intended operating temperature. In one form, the surface layer includes abrasive particles adapted to inhibit chemical reaction with the layer material. One specific example is a Ti-alloy substrate having a metallurgically bonded layer based on Nb, and including cubic boron nitride abrasive particles coated with cobalt entrapped in the layer.

Method for making a rotary seal membrane

A metal alloy article is proved with an improved fretting wear resistant coating combination for use in the temperature range of about 650.degree.-1100.degree. F. on an article contact surface shaped to cooperate with an abutting member. An example is a gas turbine engine blade base carried by an abutting support slot. The coating combination includes an inner portion of a Ni base alloy having a room temperature annealed yield strength of greater than about 30 ksi to less than about 57 ksi and densely deposited from a powder, for example by the high velocity oxygen--fuel thermal spray process rather than by other processes such as air plasma spray. Rotary seal member and method for making

An improved type of rolling element bearing, in which race land regions are protected against wear or scoring, is described. In particular, it is shown that a coating of a hard, wear-resistant material such as titanium nitride, applied to the race land region of a rolling element bearing, is effective in preventing wear or scoring of the race land region.
