A knock-out method and apparatus for use in connection with the molding of articles, such as, for example, oil seals fabricated from elastomeric material bonded to a rigid casing, including a plurality of plunger members to apply successive sequential forces to selected sets of molded oil seals for removal thereof from frictional engagement within the molding machine and permit subsequent retrieval from the molding machine. The plurality of plunger members move upward into contact with oil seals retained in the molding center plate to apply sequential forces to the selected sets of the molded articles to position the seals for ready access on top of the plate.

Molded article knock-out method

An apparatus for unloading molded articles from a molding machine having a reciprocally mounted unloader assembly. The unloader assembly is provided with a plurality of slotted bars to receive a plurality of molded articles between adjacent pairs thereof. The molded articles retained between adjacent pairs of unload bars are moved to a position at which cam followers coupled to the moveable unloader assembly contact respective fixed stop plates. Upon contact, the unloader assembly swings about a pivot rod to deposit the molded articles into a collection element.

Molded article knock-out apparatus

A molding press for insert molding of composite articles. The press has upper and lower plates movable between open and closed positions, and a die set positioned between the plates. The die set includes a core member with surfaces defining a portion of the molding cavity and another surface for receiving and supporting the insert. The core member also includes means defining a part of an area for receiving a charge of curable material and a part of a scrap forming cavity. A second mold member has surfaces defining a second portion of the article forming cavity and a second portion of said strap forming cavity, and the second mold member also includes means for engaging the insert and cooperating with it to form an axially movable flash barrier. The second mold part also has means cooperating with the insert to form a second, stationary flash barrier on an angularly related surface of the insert. The third mold member is adapted to reciprocate relative to the first and second members and has one surface for engaging a portion of said charge of moldable material for moving it from the receiving area through the scrap forming area and into the molding cavity. The first and third elements also include surfaces lying opposite each other in the closed position of said mold which serve to define a slightly spaced apart, substantially circumferentially continuous passage of reduced cross-section which separates scrap forming area from the article forming cavity. The second and third mold members are resiliently urged, in the closed position of the mold towards the first member by separate sets of resilient means interposed between portions of the second and third members and portions of the top mold plate. The method includes establishing a movable flash barrier by engaging an axial insert surface during mold closure. A seal with a unitary body, having two or more lips and a deep axial cross-section, is also described.

Insert molding apparatus with movable flash barrier

A multiple lip seal for oil and like fluids. The seal has an annular metal or like rigid casing portion of generally U-shaped cross section. A seal body is bonded to one flange of the U, and the body includes axially spaced apart, radially extending lips formed integrally with said body. In the preferred form, the flange about which the body is formed extends axially a distance at least as far as the extent of the multiple lip so that there is radial support for each of the lips, while the oppositely directed or other flange of the U-shaped casing remains free from rubber for mounting in a machine counterbore. The axially inner, intermediate and outer lips have different inside diameters in some cases and have the same diameters in other cases. Preferably, the body is thickest, and the radial extent of the lips is the shortest, at the axially inner portion of the seal. The seal assemblies can be made in either radially inwardly-acting form or in radially outwardly-acting form, depending upon the intended application. The U-shaped flange provides convenience of mounting and enables the minimal amount of rubber to be used, while providing the radial support for the axially inner seal lips referred to above.

Multiple lip seal

An apparatus for manufacturing fluid seals, which includes first and second mold parts movable along a given axis between open and closed positions. One mold part has a radially extending mold surface adapted to receive and support one surface of the flange portion of an insert to which a molded part of the seal is to be bonded, and the other mold part has a portion adapted to engage an opposite surface of the flange to hold the flange against the receiving and supporting mold surface to prevent leakage of fluid material from said cavity along the flange. One mold part includes at least one upper frusto-conical surface adapted to form one surface of the primary lip of the seal, a second seal body-forming surface of generally cylindrical form lying beneath the upper surface and joined thereto by a smooth transition portion, a lower frusto-conical surface tapering inwardly and downwardly and defining one surface of a second seal lip spaced axially from the primary lip, and an insert centering ring spaced downwardly apart from said cylindrical surface. The centering ring has a rounded nose portion of slightly greater diameter than the diameter of the cylindrical surface, and a wall surface extending downwardly and outwardly from the nose portion. The largest diameter of the centering ring is just smaller than the inside diameter of the flange of said insert. In use, when the insert is allowed to fall freely into said mold, it is centered by successive contact between its inside diameter and said first tapered surface, said cylindrical surface, and said centering ring wall surface.

Oil seal manufacturing apparatus and method

An apparatus for molding articles, particularly those having a body portion formed from a cured material and bonded to a relatively rigid insert portion. Two mold members are arranged for relative movement along a given axis between open and closed positions. Each of the members includes surfaces at least partly directed towards each other to define in said closed position of the members, a molding cavity between the members. One of the mold members has a part for engaging a relatively rigid insert, so as to form a flash barrier on the insert when it is engaged by the mold part. The mold has surfaces for supporting the insert on at least one of its surfaces. The mold assembly includes a third mold member which is movable relative to both of the other two mold members. The moldable material from which the article is to be formed is received on one mold member, and the other member is reciprocable along a given axis and adapted to apply a predetermined closing force to the first and third members. Springs or other resilient means are disposed between a mold plate and the first mold member, and a second spring is disposed between the third mold member and the mold plate, and the first and third mold members have sealing surfaces engaging each other and separated only by a working clearance. In use, the members respectively first engage the stamping, then the rubber, and finally, under the spring force, move the rubber into the mold and hold it there under a predetermined force.
