The present invention relates to an optical system for an apparatus for multi-part differential particle discrimination to facilitate analysis, classification, and sorting of various fluid components for presentation. The optical system is characterized by one or more of the following: a synchronized illumination beam and flow cell conduit, a flow cell arrangement to control back reflection, and light sensor arrangement to particularly gather a specific range of light scatter, such specific range of light scatter directly corresponding to at least one type of particle capable of being identified by the apparatus.

An oil well pumping unit has a walking beam which raises and lowers a rod connected to a downhole pump. To perform well analysis, it is desirable to know the position of the rod during the stroke. An accelerometer is mounted on the pumping system unit to move in conjunction with the rod. An output signal from the accelerometer is digitized and provided to a portable computer. The computer processes the digitized accelerometer signal to integrate it to first produce a velocity data set and second produce a position data set. Operations are carried out to modify the signal and produce a position trace with stroke markers to indicate positions of the rod during its cyclical operation.

A strobe light firing circuit is provided with an integrated circuit (10) for deriving both timing and power generating pulses. A field-effect power transistor (16) gates the power generation transients while effectively isolating the timing integrated circuit (10) from high transients during the switching of the transistor (16). Timing pulses from the timing circuit (10) are divided in frequency by a binary counter (38) and then sequentially applied at the output pins of a decade counter (40) for strobe timing sequence selection. A strobe light firing pulse is differentiated (48) to form a pulse for shutting off power generation pulses from time (10) for a time effective for the flash tube (58) to recover for a subsequent discharge.
