An electronic unit injector for a diesel engine that has a check valve for maintaining a pressure greater than vapor pressure and being located as close as practical to a plunger chamber to minimize fluid hammer effects on the check valve and has a fuel capture volume below the check valve that is proportioned to store sufficient static energy in compression of the captured fuel to reclose the check valve if opened by fluid hammer action.

An electronic unit injector comprising a spray tip including a valve seat, a needle valve arranged to close on the seat to prevent discharge of fuel from the spray tip or to open off the seat to dispense fuel from the spray tip, a spring biasing the needle valve to a closed position, a spring seat between the spring and the needle valve, the needle valve overcoming the biasing force when the pressure reaches a predetermined level, the spring and seat being disposed in a cage having port areas circumferentially arranged about said spring and spring seat to supply low pressure fuel to the area occupied by said spring and spring seat to reduce the risk of cavitation in said spring cage.

Electronic unit injectors

A coolant-shunt-providing cylinder liner of the flanged type is provided with a shunt circuit within the liner for coolant flow through the liner. The shunt circuit includes an array of three annular cooling channels separated from each other by two annular ribs. The width (axial extent) of each channel is substantially less than half the axial extent of the liner's cylinder block engaging portion that is associated with the upper end of the liner. The width (axial extent) of the array of three channels is substantially greater than half the axial extent of the cylinder block engaging portion. Cutouts in the ribs are provided for distributing incoming coolant to the three cooling channels from a main coolant chamber of a cylinder block in which the liner is receivable.

A novel injection-pump plunger used in a unit injector for an EMD-type diesel engine has its upper (cut-off) control edge shaped to retard start of injection at full power from what it is with standard plungers, and to provide in a straight-line manner a relatively small increase in retardation from full load to idle. In a preferred form, the plunger has one or more steps in its upper (cut-off) control edge, the step or steps being formed between adjacent segments of the edge that are associated with different load points. A method of improving emissions/fuel-economy of EMD diesel engines comprises using prototype injection-pump plungers shaped within certain parameters, assessing their performance, selecting new patterns of timing based on the assessment, making new prototype plungers and assessing them, and repeating the steps of selecting, making and assessing if and as required until an assessment indicates compliance with applicable performance standards.

Means for optimizing unit injectors for improved emissions/fuel-economy

A deceleration warning system for motor vehicles which uses engine vacuum to operate a warning signal visible to following traffic. Rapid intake duct pressure fluctuations, which can cause malfunction and deterioration of the vacuum switch, are filtered out by a pressure control unit. The pressure control unit allows a vacuum connection to the intake duct for one cylinder, most conveniently by means of a fitting that screws into a throttle synchronizing port. Fuel vapor, which can enter an intake vacuum system and condense therein, is continually purged while the engine is operating. This purging action allows the vacuum switch to be mounted below the intake duct without the danger of fuel accumulating in the system.

A gas containment and delivery system that can be efficiently and cost-effectively adapted to a wide variety of gas delivery needs. The system has a gas containment box that can be efficiently adapted to provide double containment for sections of toxic gas lines having gas delivery components such as valves, regulators, and gauges. The system may be either floor-mounted or wall-mounted, and can be used in a wide variety of semiconductor fabrication facilities.

In order to determine the direction and degree of bank of a motorcycle, a flywheel or other weight balanced at its center of mass is mounted on the motorcycle so that it is free to rotate about an axis parallel to the longitudinal axis of the motorcycle. As the vehicle banks, the flywheel will tend to maintain its position, and the angle of bank can be ascertained by measuring the direction and degree of rotation between the plane of the motorcycle and the flywheel. Measurement of flywheel rotation is obtained by means of an electromagnetic or electro-optical scanner. This device may be used to control headlight beam rotation about the beam axis, thereby keeping the horizontal cutoff of the rectangular beam cross-section parallel to the horizon at all times. Because of friction and vibration, however, the flywheel position may drift relative to the horizon, rendering the angle measurement inaccurate. Therefore it is necessary for the operator to correct for flywheel drift periodically by stopping flywheel rotation when the vehicle is upright or normal to the road surface. This driver input also resets the headlight beam to its normal position. For daytime use, the headlight beam may be locked in its normal position.

The zero bank angle, or upright position, for the motorcycle is determined by one or more distance sensors, or by detecting a zero steering angle, using a suitable rotary switch between the frame and the fork assembly.

A high-pressure, flexible, self-supportive, piping assembly for use with a diffuser/nozzle (10), allowing the position of the diffuse/nozzle to be conveniently adjusted in an unlimited number of directions. The invention as defined in its preferred embodiment provides a diffuser/nozzle (10) connected to a first end of the high-pressure, flexible, self-supportive, piping assembly that is made up of a plurality of interconnected ball and socket elements (30) which creates a conduit in which a hose (40) capable of withstanding high-pressure fluids or gases is dispose therein, the said hose is functionlly connected to a fluid supply connector (50) at its second end. The assembly is encased within a plastic shrinkable tubing(60) for additional rigidity and to provide a better gripping surface.

A device which determines the direction and amount of tilt, lean, bank, or attitude of a vehicle relative to the road surface by means of one or more sensors which measure the return time of emitted energy reflected from the road surface. Vehicle attitude information is used to move, correct, adjust, or otherwise alter preselected vehicle parts or functions according to a predetermined combination of computer paradigms and mechanical linkages. This process can be used to adjust the headlight beam orientation in order to better illuminate the forward path of the vehicle. The headlight beam may be further adjusted according to information on vehicle speed and changes thereof. The Motorcycle Headlight Aiming Device may be used to aim a camera which is mounted to a banking vehicle. Bank angle data may also be used to switch off a turn signal mechanism, and to limit engine power at extreme angles of bank. Engine power may also be limited when sensor data indicates front wheel lift-off.
