There is disclosed a valve assembly and a reciprocating type fluid pump having a piston cylinder and a cylinder head together which define a fluid chamber. A first ring valve having a seal surface on one side is disposed within the fluid chamber adjacent to the cylinder head to close at least one fluid intake passage. A bias means is provided for urging the first ring valve against the seat on the head by abutting the ring valve on the side opposite from the seal surface, and the bias means includes a peripheral region which is connected to the fluid pump and retains the first ring valve between the cylinder head and the bias means.

Ring valve type air compressor

A compressor unloaded system for use in compressed air supply systems having reciprocating type air compressor means supplied with atmospheric or turbocharged air is shown. Means are provided to block off the air intake of such compressors, and to maintain back pressure against the exhaust valve of said air compressor during an unloading cycle, thereby preventing operation of the intake and exhaust valves of such compressor, and creating an 'air spring' in the cylinder of such air compressor during an unloading cycle.

Air compressor unloader system

A compressor having either an axial or radial stage adjacent the air inlet includes a circumferential row of slots in the inner casing wall, the slots opening into the casing bore; a rotor having a leading row of compressor blades thereon rotatable within the bore with the tips of the blades adjacent the row of slots; and, the axial centerline of the circumferential row of slots being positioned axially forward of the axial centerline of the blades of the leading blade row with a substantial portion of the axial slot length of each slot being forward of the leading edge of the blades of the leading blade row. In a preferred form of the compressor, the inner casing wall includes a circumferential stationary ring having an inner wall for defining with the inner casing wall the bore in which the rotor rotates, the circumferential row of slots being formed in the ring wall.

Compressor range improvement means

A turbocharger assembly including a flexible anti-friction bearing support to prevent loss of gripping interference at high temperatures and destructive compressive loads at low temperatures. A simplified hydrodynamic fluid (such as lubrication oil) supply is disclosed for providing lubricating oil to the anti-friction bearing and hydrodynamic fluid to a hydrodynamic sleeve bearing. A novel end plate design permits limited radial movement of the bearing support while resisting axial thrust loads of the turbo shaft.

Turbocharger assembly including a flexible anti-friction bearing support

This disclosure relates to a bearing assembly for a high speed rotating shaft, such as a turbocharger shaft. The bearing assembly includes a sleeve bearing and a ball bearing. The sleeve bearing carries the radial load adjacent one end of the shaft, and the ball bearing carries the radial load adjacent the other end of the shaft. The shaft is subject to thrust loads in either axial direction, and the ball bearing also carries the thrust load in at least one direction.

Bearing assembly for high speed shaft

A viscous fluid clutch is provided which embodies first, second and third drive members rotatable about a common axis. The second drive member is provided with an internal chamber in which both the first and third drive members are disposed. A predetermined amount of viscous fluid is disposed within the chamber. The third drive member is positioned between the first drive member and a chamber-forming wall of the second drive member. The second and third drive members rotate as a unit and the third drive member is movable axially independently of said second drive member. Corresponding surfaces of the first and third drive members form therebetween an annular fluid shear space concentric with the rotary axis of the drive members. The chamber-forming wall of the second drive member is provided with a thermal-responsive membrane having a segment thereof independently movable axially of the first drive member in response to predetermined ambient temperature changes. Axial movement of the membrane effects axial movement of the third drive member and varies the configuration of the annular fluid shear space. All of the drive members are adapted to rotate as a unit when the first and third drive members are in closest axial proximity and the annular fluid shear space is substantially filled with the viscous fluid.

Viscous fluid clutch

A bearing particularly suitable for high-speed operation is provided and includes inner and outer races, a plurality of spherical elements disposed between the races and in rolling contact therewith, and a retainer disposed between the races and maintaining the elements in annularly spaced relation. The retainer is of molded one-piece construction and embodies first and second ringlike sections disposed in axially spaced concentric relation. The ringlike sections are interconnected by a plurality of annularly spaced struts. Corresponding segments of the ringlike sections, disposed between a pair of struts, have oppositely disposed, spherically contoured surfaces in contact with a spherical element positioned therebetween.

Bearing construction and retainer therefor

This disclosure deals with a system for indicating to the driver of a vehicle a figure which represents the operating efficiency of the vehicle and which is derived from the fuel consumed and the distance traveled by the vehicle. The system measures the speed of the vehicle and a characteristic of the fuel supply system of the engine which is indicative of the fuel consumption. These two factors are combined in a dividing circuit which produces a signal that is fed to an indicator for displaying the figure to the operator of the vehicle. The vehicle engine has a fuel supply system including injectors and a fuel pressure regulating apparatus. The total fuel flowing to the injectors is divided into a burned flow portion and a return flow portion, and the burned flow portion is a relatively fixed ratio of the total flow. The characteristic of the supply system which is sensed is the total flow, and because of the fixed ratio, it is indicative of the fuel consumption rate.

Fuel consumption rate indicating system for a vehicle

A fluid drive coupling is provided which includes a platelike first member rotatably mounted within a chamber formed in a second member, the latter also being rotatably mounted. Both members are rotatable about a common axis and one of the members is driven by an external force. The chamber is formed into an annular fluid drive section having surfaces thereof in close proximity to substantial outer opposite surface portions of the first member whereby rotation of one member imparts rotation to the other member through a fluid disposed within the chamber drive section. The chamber is also formed into an inner section, a portion of which, disposed to one side of the first member, is separated into first and second fluid reservoirs interconnected to one another only through a port. A thermal responsive valve is mounted on the second member and is rotatable therewith. The valve effects opening and closing of the port in response to predetermined temperatures. An elongated cavity is formed in the second member adjacent to and in communication with a peripheral segment of the chamber drive section. An elongated skimming means is disposed in slip fit relation within the cavity and has a portion thereof projecting into the chamber drive section and encompassing a peripheral portion of the first member. When the first member is rotating in one direction relative to the second member, the skimming means will cause removal of fluid from the surfaces of the rotating first member encompassed thereby and divert the removed fluid into the cavity whereupon the fluid will flow from the cavity into the first reservoir.
