Corrosion-inhibited antifreeze formulation

A corrosion-inhibited liquid alcohol antifreeze/coolant composition comprising aliphatic C.sub.5 -C.sub.16 monobasic and C.sub.5 -C.sub.16 hydrocarbyl dibasic acids/salts, a hydrocarbyl azole, and a hydrocarbyl alkali metal sulfonate which is either a C.sub.10 -C.sub.20 alkyl benzene alkali metal sulfonate or a C.sub.10 -C.sub.20 alpha-olefin alkali metal sulfonate having an average molecular weight in the range 200-2000 is described. Aqueous corrosion-inhibited antifreeze/coolant compositions based on the above-described concentrate composition, where said concentrate is diluted with 10-90 weight percent water, are also described.

Corrosion-inhibited antifreeze/coolant composition containing

A corrosion inhibitor for use in water and liquid alcohol antifreeze/coolant compositions comprising the combination of a C.sub.5 -C.sub.16 aliphatic monobasic acid or the alkali metal, ammonium, or amine salt of said acid, a C.sub.5 -C.sub.16 hydrocarbyl dibasic acid or the alkali metal, ammonium, or amine salt of said acid, and a hydrocarbyl triazole gives synergistic corrosion protection to metal surfaces as compared with formulations containing either the monoacid or diacid component alone, or formulations containing other conventional corrosion inhibitors.

Monobasic-dibasic acid/salt antifreeze corrosion inhibitor

A corrosion inhibited antifreeze composition incorporating a corrosion inhibitor is described. Six dibasic salts of dicyclopentadiene dicarboxylic acid and optionally a triazole comprise the corrosion inhibitor.

Dicyclopentadiene dicarboxylic acid salts as corrosion inhibitors

A corrosion inhibited antifreeze composition using a three-part corrosion inhibitor mixture is described. A dicarboxylic acid component, an alkali metal silicate and a triazole comprise the three corrosion inhibitors. Use of this type of mixture permits the express exclusion of amines, nitrites, nitrates, chromates, borates and phosphates and their attendant disadvantages. Nevertheless, the inventive system provides excellent corrosion resistance in alcohol-based antifreeze, particularly with respect to aluminum.

Non-borate, non-phosphate antifreeze formulations containing dibasic

Non-silicate, non-gelling corrosion inhibited antifreeze compositions containing a water-soluble liquid alcohol freezing point depressant and an inhibitor combination comprising an alkali metal salt of benzoic acid, an alkali metal salt of a dicarboxylic acid and an alkali metal nitrate are described. These formulations work just as well or better than silicate-based formulations in all regards and have the advantage of not having to contain expensive organo silane gellation inhibitors as do silicate-containing antifreezes. The dicarboxylic acid used preferably has eight to twelve carbon atoms.

Non-silicate antifreeze formulations

The use of dicarboxylic acids or the salts thereof in aqueous solutions to prevent the corrosion of high lead solders contacted thereby is described. These materials are particularly useful in phosphate-based antifreezes. Particularly preferred is the combination of a dicarboxylic acid and an alkali metal molybdate. This mixture gives greater corrosion protection to high lead solder than either component alone.

High lead solder corrosion inhibitors

Gellation resistant aqueous glycol compositions containing an alkylene glycol, a corrosion inhibiting additive and an effective amount of an organo polysiloxane gellation resistant additive are described. Corrosion inhibiting additives tend to gel after some time in aqueous glycol solution, a phenomenon which is inhibited by 100 to 10,000 ppm of the polysiloxane additives of this invention. These polysiloxanes may have one or more substituents selected from the group of moieties of alkyl, alkoxy, cyano, diol ether, carboxylic acid, amide, aryl, alkaryl and acyl.

Polyalkylpolyalkoxypolysiloxane stabilizers for inorganic silicates in

Stabilizers for inorganic silicate corrosion inhibitor additives in antifreeze/coolant formulations are described. The stabilizers are organosiloxanes which have ethylenediamine triacetic acid moieties as the solubilizing group. A particularly preferred stabilizer is N-(trimethoxysilylpropyl)ethylenediamine triacetic acid, ##STR1## These stabilizers help prevent the corrosion-inhibiting silicate additives from precipitating out and thus extend the shelf life of antifreeze formulations into which they are incorporated.

Ethylenediamine triacetic acid siloxane stabilizers for inorganic

Stabilizers for inorganic silicate corrosion inhibitor additives in antifreeze/coolant formulations are described. The stabilizers have the structure ##STR1## where n is an integer from 1 to 20 and R is a solubilizing agent. The solubilizing group may be a cyano-terminated group, a diol ether group, an acid group, an amide group, a group which will yield a diol on hydrolysis, among others. These stabilizers help prevent the inorganic silicate additives from precipitating out and thus extend the shelf life of antifreeze formulations into which they are incorporated.

Siloxane stabilizers for inorganic silicates in antifreeze/coolant

Novel feedstocks for the production of synthetic lubricant base oils are described. The feedstock is a blend of internal and alpha olefins with the internal olefins comprising more than 50 but less than 99 weight percent of the blend. The alpha olefins may be derived from ethylene polymerization or wax pyrolysis. The olefins may be oligomerized over a boron trifluoride catalyst and a promoter. When the oligomers are hydrogenated they provide a synthetic lubricant base stock having excellent properties.

Feedstocks for the production of synthetic lubricants

A method for oligomerizing olefins in the presence of boron trifluoride and a co-catalyst comprising a heterogeneous cationic ion exchange resin catalyst is described. While the resin catalyst cannot oligomerize olefins by itself at temperatures around 75.degree.-85.degree. C., when used together with boron trifluoride an oligomer mixture may be created which has improved properties over oligomers made over only boron trifluoride. If a resin catalyst is used, a protonic promoter is not required.
