An immersive headset device is provided that includes a display portion and a body portion. The display portion may include microdisplays having a compact size. The microdisplays may be movable (e.g., rotational) relative to the body portion and can be moved (e.g., rotated) between a flipped-up position and a flipped-down position. In some instances, when the microdisplays are flipped up, the headset provides an augmented reality (AR) mode to a user, and when the microdisplays are flipped down, the headset provide a virtual reality (VR) mode to the user. In certain implementations, the headset includes an electronics source module to provide power and/or signal to the microdisplays. The electronics source module can be attached to a rear of the body portion in order to provide advantageous weight distribution about the head of the user.

Microdisplay based immersive headset

Use of a filter in lieu of a secondary reflector in a reflective telescope provides compact design that eliminates the obstruction caused by the secondary reflector. The filter is selectively reflective to either the angle of incidence of radiation striking the filter or to the polarization exhibited by the radiation. An angularly sensitive filter may be constructed to either a bandpass filter or a short pass filter. A filter that is sensitive to polarization is constructed from a cholesteric liquid crystal. The filter is disposed in front of a primary reflector that comprises an aperture for collecting radiation observed by the telescope.

Method and apparatus for unobstructed telescopic communications

A collimating apparatus that reduces ghost images in the field of view of a main image generated. The collimating apparatus includes a meniscus lens having a reflective concave surface; a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC), aligned on an axis common with the meniscus lens, disposed on the concave side of the meniscus lens, positioned to reflect light onto the concave surface and having a tilt making the normal of the CLC different from the normal of the meniscus lens; and an image source, disposed on the convex side of the meniscus lens and having a tilt corresponding to the tilt of the CLC. The tilted pair of the meniscus and image source direct any ghost images produced by light leaking through the CLC away from the line of sight of an observer of the main image.

Method and apparatus for reducing ghost images with a tilted cholesteric

A compact, lightweight dichoptic display system is provided. The system utilizes a single image generating device which alternately provides low resolution, wide field-of-view images with high resolution, narrow field-of-view images of a specific area of the same scene. The light radiated by the image generating device is linearly polarized. The polarized light passes through a controllable retarder, the retarder imparting a 180 degree phase delay to alternating scenes. Using a polarization sensitive beam splitter, the images generated by the display are directed to alternate eyepieces. Collimating optics are used to insure that the two images appear to be the same distance from the user, therefore enabling the user to properly combine the two images.

Dichoptic display utilizing a single display device

An endoscopic probe for viewing difficult to reach surfaces is provided. The system utilizes a pair of image transmission elements. The first image transmission element passes a low resolution, wide field of view image of the surface to be examined to one eyepiece. The second image transmission element passes a high resolution, narrow field of view image of a portion of the same surface to a second eyepiece. Thus the viewer receives low resolution, wide field of view information in one eye and high resolution, narrow field of view information in the other eye. The overlapped, low resolution information from the wide field-of-view scene is suppressed by the brain, thus resulting in the two images being combined. The combined image contains both the low resolution, wide field-of-view information and the high resolution, narrow field-of-view information. The endoscopic probe may contain one or more illumination sources in order to provide sufficient light intensity for the imaging system.

High resolution, wide field of view endoscopic viewing system

Device for rapidly and automatically deploying and retracting a combiner attached to a visored helmet. A combination of opposing springs, one made from conventional materials and the other from shape memory alloy (SMA), effects a detent mechanism and the retracting and deploying mechanism. The conventional spring normally exerts a greater force than the SMA spring, but the latter exerts the greater force upon being heated, preferably by means of an electric current passing through the spring. Alternative deployment and retraction means include a solenoid-conventional spring combination or an electrical motor which used in conjunction with a locking and unlocking means incorporating a SMA spring.
