A wireless local area network for digital radio communication between remote devices and a PBX telephone system, wherein the remote devices can access and use the voice message features in the PBX and the data bases on a host computer and servers. A wireless phone is provided for voice and data communication through the PBX or a CO telephone line with remote locations or the Internet using digital data packets and standard Internet Protocol. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the remote device is a cash register comprising a bar code scanner and a phone. Radio communication between the register and a host computer is carried out over two channels, a first channel for data communication and a second channel for voice communication.

A wavelength selector in an optical scanner is operative for selecting a first laser beam having a predetermined wavelength to produce a first scan pattern, and for selecting a second laser beam having a different wavelength to produce a second scan pattern. The scan patterns have a different number of scan lines. The selected scan pattern is scanned over indicia, e.g., a bar code symbol, to be read.

An integrated scanner for scanning a barcode is formed on a common substrate. The scanner may include a micro-machined mirror, a laser diode, and a detector, mounted on a single substrate or several connected substrates. Lenses can be used to focus a laser beam from the laser diode as well as expand a laser beam deflected by the micro-machined mirror. The scanner may also scan a barcode without using a micro-machined mirror by rotating the laser diode.

The present invention relates to a personal shopping system for combined use in both the home of a user and a shopping establishment. The system includes a host computer which is coupled to a host modem and, optionally, to at least one wireless multi-access point. At least one shopping establishment kiosk cradle is employed to interface with a portable terminal which is also part of the system. The portable terminal can be used in both the shopping establishment and the home of the user. It is configured to read bar codes associated with items related to shopping, and includes a memory, a bar code reader, a wireless transceiver, and a data interface. A home cradle for the portable terminal is also provided and is adapted to remain in the home of the user. A home data transfer circuit is also included to permit data exchange between the home data interface and the modem coupled to the host computer.

A compact assembly for electro-optically scanning indicia includes an oscillatable component operative for focusing, and for sweeping, a light beam across the indicia and, optionally, for correcting for scan aberration. A portable terminal carried by a user and in wireless communication with a local area network for displaying data based on the physical location of the user. A plurality of network nodes is distributed throughout a venue, such as a shopping mall or a store, in which products are offered for sale. The location of the user is determined by the location of the access node in communication with the terminal. The data may include a recommendation to purchase the product.
