The present invention discloses new catalyst systems based on trivalent metal complexes of Formula I, which can facilitate the stereospecific ring-opening polymerization of (rac)-&#x3b2;-Butyrolactone (rac-BBL). Also provided is a process for the stereospecific synthesis of aliphatic polyesters using the catalysts of Formula I, including alcohols and polyols as chain-transfer agents to facilitate immortal ring-opening polymerization.

A coating for protecting a substrate from corrosion includes a first layer having a first composition applied on the substrate. The coating has a thickness of at least 0.5 &#x3bc;m. The first composition includes an intercalated mixture of a polymer and a clay according to a formula of (P/C), where v comprises a volume of the intercalated mixture applied to the substrate.

The second ligand includes a second carboxylic moiety. The coating includes a metal that is a lanthanoid metal, and the coating includes a coating resin.
