Diels-Alder adducts of the polyol esters of rosin are prepared by reaction with alpha, beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids, their esters, and anhydrides.

Rosin ester modified with unsaturated carboxylic acid function

A process for producing long-chained diesters of C.sub.22 and C.sub.32 diacids. The process comprises the steps of reacting cyclohexanone with an alcohol of 1-6 carbon atoms and hydrogen peroxide in the presence of an acid catalyst and water at a temperature below the boiling point of the alcohol. Methoxycyclohexyl hydroperoxide is thus produced and reacted with a terpene diene in the presence of a transition metal salt in a nitrogen atmosphere to produce long-chained diesters of C.sub.22 and C.sub.32 diacids. These long-chained diesters are then separated from the reaction mixture.

Terpene diesters and process for preparing the same

Formic acid is disclosed as a catalyst for polymerizing rosin. The discovery is the basis of a method for polymerizing rosin by heating the rosin in the presence of a catalytic proportion of formic acid. The catalyst is easily separated from the polymerized rosin for reuse.

Polymers having pendant sulfonic acid groups are disclosed as catalysts for polymerizing rosin.

A process for the recovery of isobutylene as tertiary butyl alcohol from a stream of C.sub.4 hydrocarbons comprising contacting the stream with an aqueous acid solution comprising from 50 to 80 wt % hydrocarbyl sulfonic acid, recovering from the resultant mixture an aqueous acid phase containing tertiary butyl alcohol and recovering from the acid phase the product tertiary butyl alcohol.

Process for the preparation of tertiary butyl alcohol

Tertiary butyl alcohol is dehydrated in the presence of para-toluene sulfonic acid catalyst and xylene which forms an azeotrope with the water of hydration. Isobutylene and water, formed by the dehydration reaction, along with xylene, are removed as a vapor fraction. Xylene serves a dual purpose, acting as a solvent for paratoluene sulfonic acid so that this catalyst can contact the tertiary butyl alcohol feed, and also acting as an azeotrope forming agent to remove water as it is formed and to promote the dehydration reaction.
