The device includes a central unit configured to receive an instruction to activate one among a plurality of preset functions for lighting the passenger compartment, and functionally connected to a plurality of command devices, each of which is configured to command the activation of a group of light sources of the matrix. The central unit is configured to select a plurality of light sources of the matrix to activate to produce the lighting function, and to transmit instructions to the command devices in order to command the activation of the selected light sources.
