A convenient versatile telephone handset has one set of telephone activating keys and another set of computer control keys. The special telephone handset can also have a card-receiving slot and a recessed mouthpiece. Advantageously, the flexible telephone handset is particularly useful for business travelers in airplanes, trains, and buses to link up to reservation systems and other data bases.

A convenient versatile telephone handset and holder assembly are provided, which are particularly useful for business travelers in airplanes, trains, ships, and buses to link up to reservation systems and other data bases. The telephone handset preferably has one set of telephone activating keys and another set of computer control keys. The special telephone handset can also have a card-receiving slot and a recessed mouthpiece. The handset holder assembly has a sloping bottom portion and an elastomeric biasing member to facilitate quick removal fo the telephone handset. An overhead lock assembly can be provided to engage the credit card-receiving slot of the telephone handset in order to secure the handset when the handset is stored in the holder. A special reversible mount plate and bracket can also be provided to quickly and securely mount the handset to the left, right, or other portions of a chair, bulkhead, or other surface.

Telephone handset holder assembly

A telephone holder and latching mechanism for use in conjunction with a hand-held, credit-card telephone in, for example, a commercial aircraft is disclosed. An integrally formed face plate, an integrally formed handset holder, and an integrally formed latching mechanism cooperate to firmly secure a hand-held telephone in a cavity of the holder while discouraging unnecessary tampering and permitting easy removal of the telephone when desired. A first end of the telephone includes a collar which fits into a collar opening at one end of the cavity. An opposing end of the cavity has a latching opening that permits a finger from the latching mechanism to extend therethrough. The latching mechanism is spring-loaded so that the finger is urged through the latching opening. A second end of the telephone incorporates a latching protrusion which the finger engages when the telephone is secured in the holder. A slot in the face plate is dimensioned to accommodate a credit card and prevent insertion of larger objects. When the credit card is inserted through the slot, it engages the latching mechanism, causing the latching mechanism to pivot in opposition to the spring to disengage the finger from the handset. Compressive resilient members located in the cavity then push the telephone outward from the cavity. Further action of the finger against a ramped surface of the latching protrusion moves the telephone further outward.

Holder and latching mechanism for a hand-held telephone

For use in conjunction with vehicular, hand-held, pay telephone, a telephone dispenser and latching mechanism for securing the telephone in the dispenser and, in response to actuation by a telephone user, releasing the telephone from the dispenser. The dispenser includes an elongated dispenser channel or stepwise construction. The dispenser channel is enclosed at one end by a latch plate including a credit-card-actuated latching mechanism. The dispenser channel is enclosed at an opposite end by a face plate having an opening for the insertion and extraction of the telephone from the dispenser channel and a slot for the insertion of a credit-card. The latch-release actuator is located behind the face plate slot and is mechanically linked to the latching mechanism. A credit card, once inserted into the slot, causes the latching mechanism to disengage from the telephone, permitting an ejector mechanism to urge the telephone out of the dispenser. The telephone dispenser and its associated telephone are mounted to the passenger seat armrest of a commercial vehicle. A cord retractor is also mounted to the armrest in proximity to the dispenser. The cord retractor is adapted to store a telephone cord when the telephone is placed within the dispenser and to dispense an appropriate amount of telephone cord when the telephone is extracted from the telephone dispenser.

In conjunction with a hand-held, credit-card telephone for use aboard, for example, commerical aircraft, a telephone dispenser and credit-card unlatching mechanism ('CCUM'). The dispenser includes a dispenser channel of generally longitudinal stepwise construction. The dispenser also includes an outer cover affixed substantially over the dispenser channel and a face plate secured to a first end of the outer cover. A latch plate is secured to a second end of the dispenser channel, so that the dispenser channel, the outer cover, the face plate, and the latch plate, in cooperation, define a telephone-receiving cavity in which a hand-held telephone is secured when not in use. The face plate includes an opening providing access to the telephone-receiving cavity and a slot for the insertion of a credit card. The CCUM itself includes a latch plate secured to the dispenser channel. A latching mechanism is secured to the latch plate and is operated to selectively, in response to the insertion of a credit card into the slot, latch or unlatch the hand-held telephone from the telephone-receiving cavity. The hand-held telephone is withdrawn and replaced into the dispenser through the opening on the face plate.

Pay station telephone and dispenser for a commercial conveyance

For use in conjunction with vehicular, hand-held, pay telephone, a telephone holder and latching mechanism for securing the telephone in the holder and, in response to actuation by a telephone user, releasing the telephone from the holder. The holder includes an elongated holder channel of stepwise construction. The holder channel is enclosed at one end by a butt plate that provides access holes for the telephone line cord and a hook switch. The holder channel is enclosed at an opposite end by a credit-card-actuated latching mechanism. The latching mechanism includes a matching plate that provides a slot aligned with a slot in the holder face plate. A credit card, once inserted into the slots, is guided by a holder box so that the credit card is caused to abut a latch-release plate that is pivotably mounted to the holder channel. Rotation of the latch-release plate about the pivot points withdraws a latch-retainer bracket from a slot in the telephone and permits an ejector mechanism to urge the telephone out of the holder.

In conjunction with a hand-held, credit-card telephone for use aboard, for example, commerical aircraft, a telephone holder and credit-card unlatching mechanism ('CCUM'). The holder includes a holder channel of generally longitudinal, stepwise construction. The holder also includes a face plate with a vertical slot for the insertion of a credit card. A butt plate, secured to one end of the holder channel, and the CCUM, which is secured to the other end of the holder channel, together form, with the holder channel, a telephone-receiving cavity in which the telephone is secured when not in use. The CCUM itself includes a latch plate attached to the holder channel and exhibits a longitudinal slot in alignment with the vertical slot in the face plate. A latching mechanism is secured to the holder channel and operates to selectively, in response to the insertion of a credit card, latch or unlatch the telephone from the telephone-receiving cavity. A credit-card guide is attached to the latch plate and disposed between the latch plate and a latch-release plate of the latching mechanism for guiding the travel of a credit card that has been inserted into the slot.
