A centrifugal liquid pump including a housing section having an intake cavity and defining a rotational axis of the pump. An impeller section is in communication with and extends coaxially of the intake cavity of the housing section. An impeller is mounted in the impeller section rotatable about the pump axis. A ramp is formed in the intake cavity of the housing section about the pump axis. The ramp includes an axial slope component such that liquid rotating in the intake cavity will be given an axial component of motion toward the impeller section and a radial slope component such that liquid rotating in the intake cavity will be given a radially inward component of motion toward the pump axis.

A micro-contoured surface is formed about a substantial portion of the edge of the end bearing face of each gear tooth of a gear having a plurality of circumferential gear teeth each with an end bearing face for carrying an axial thrust load against a flat housing bearing face or the like. The micro-contoured surface forms a wedge space between the bearing faces which when filled with a fluid establishes a hydro-dynamic film pressure distribution over the entire end bearing face of the gear tooth upon relative motion between the bearing faces.

System for lubricating gear end faces

A gear pump which includes a pair of intermeshing gears. A housing defines a pumping chamber having peripheral walls surrounding and in sealing contact with the circumference of the gears between an inlet port and a discharge port. Bearing walls are adapted to engage adjacent side faces of the gears in substantially sealing relation. Grooves are provided in the bearing walls for progressively admitting pressure to the gear teeth as the gear teeth move toward the discharge port. The grooves are acruately shaped and diverge toward the discharge port from a point intermediate the inlet and discharge ports and allow compressed air in the liquid to be gradually displaced by liquid under pressure from the pump discharge.

A centrifugal pump has a casing with an impeller cavity in which a shrouded impeller is mounted and with front and rear labyrinth seals associated one with each of the front and rear shrouds of the impeller and located near the inner ends of the shrouds. An additional seal is positioned inwardly of the rear labyrinth seal to substantially seal a space behind the innermost part of the rear shroud and a pump structure is mounted on the impeller to the rear of the rear shroud for pumping fluid from the substantially sealed space to the entrance of a volute surrounding the impeller. The impeller shaft has a front thrust bearing coacting with a bearing surface, with fluid passing therebetween for lubrication and with the flow of the fluid being controlled to a minimal amount by a force imbalance on the impeller shaft created by location of the front and rear labyrinth seals at different distances from the axis of rotation of the impeller whereby pressure forces acting at the rear of the impeller urge the impeller shaft in a forward direction.
